The Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the top public school of public health in the U.S. and second overall, behind Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings. Effective, creative and cutting- edge fundraising strategies are an important part of our leadership strategy. The Associate Dean for Advancement is the School’’s chief fundraising leader and he she also serves as Executive Director of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Public Health Foundation, Inc. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean and is a member of the Dean’’s Council in a senior management capacity. In these dual roles, s he is responsible for identifying, developing and nurturing relationships with alumni, major donors, influential individuals who may become donors, foundations, corporations, and other potential funders to expand the assets of the Foundation and the capacity of the School. SPH Advancement includes both fundraising functions and alumni relations. The Associate Dean integrates and coordinates advancement activities and assures that they meet the goals and objectives of the School as articulated by the Dean, in collaboration with internal and external leadership. The Associate Dean will work closely with the Dean to oversee successful planning and execution for a 200 million (exact amount still to be determined) SPH fundraising campaign in association with the forthcoming university-wide campaign. He she also will maintain a portfolio that includes some of the highest-rated donors and potential donors to the School. The Associate Dean also is Executive Director of the School’’s Foundation. In this capacity, he she leads the volunteer board and oversees all its activities. He she also manages the SPH Advisory Council and oversees the Alumni Association Board. Other ad-hoc volunteer groups also are created from time to time for particular purposes. Finally, the Associate Dean functions as a member of the UNC Development team to lead the overall UNC Chapel Hill development operation. In that capacity, there is a dotted line relationship to the University’’s Vice-Chancellor for Development.
Education and Experience:
Minimum ten years’’ successful fundraising experience with a proven track record of soliciting and closing gifts above 1million; Exceptional written and oral communications skills, including through use of digital communications; Demonstrated, effective experience leading volunteer boards; Experience producing case statements and other campaign tools. Facility with social media and the use of internet tools in donor relations; Prior experience in higher education setting; Experience establishing effective working relationships with leaders, donors, faculty, students and alumni of the school; Attention to detail, time-management, and excellent organizational skills; Knowledge of North Carolina, sensitivity to the special nature of the region, and an appreciation of the role of the public University in North Carolina and the potential impact of advancing the public’’s health as well as advancing the discipline of public health; Able to interact effectively in a complex, public research university setting with both local and global impact; Able to function in a fast-paced, excellent but lean organization with a high energy level and the drive to be successful; Ability to lead and manage a high-performing team and to collaborate effectively with other teams and individuals across the School, University and beyond; Willingness to attend functions nights and weekends; and Flexibility to travel up to 30-40 .
