Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the Media Relations Manager is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring media outreach efforts - including writing, pitching to media, responding to media inquiries and managing internal news dissemination - to promote Duquesne University to the public and key internal and external stakeholders.
The position requires the ability to work with schools, departments and offices across campus to identify story ideas promoting Duquesne initiatives and experts to pitch to local, regional, state, and national media. Additionally, the media relations manager writes and edits internal communication materials highlighting Duquesne initiatives to campus audiences.
This position also develops content for social media and may be required to post information for the University's official social media accounts.
The position works collaboratively with fellow members of the media relations team as well as the web and marketing communications teams.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Creates and implements a University-wide media strategy/plan in conjunction with the Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Communications and the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications, proactively identifying stories promoting University initiatives and experts to pitch to local, regional, state, and national media.
Researches, writes and distributes news releases and media advisories promoting campus news including events, grants, awards, research, University rankings and others as appropriate.
Manages incoming media inquiries including recommending positioning and talking points, identifying appropriate experts, escorting media and/or granting approval for media to come onto campus.
Manages, writes, edits, proofreads and contributes content to various internal and external campus news publications such as the Times, the alumni magazine, the website, campus-wide emails and others as appropriate.
Researches contributed-article opportunities with various publications and works to identify campus experts as potential authors, review draft articles and serve as a liaison with the publications to ensure deadlines are met, photos are appropriate, etc.
Monitors, tracks and creates quarterly and annual reports of media coverage using electronic University tools.
Develops content ideas and photos for official University social media channels; monitors posts as needed.
Facilitates campus filming requests from movie and television studios and other video/photography production firms as requested.
Reviews and coordinates periodic updating of a crisis communications plan with the Associate Vice President.
Serves as a member of the emergency communications team.
Trains and works with student aides/interns on select tasks such as media coverage reports, writing projects and others.
Must be available after work hours and on weekends as necessary.
Perform related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field. A minimum of five years of experience in media relations or public relations is essential and experience in higher education is preferred. Excellent command of grammar, punctuation, writing for the media, proofreading and editing are essential. Demonstrated success with placing stories in media outlets is required. Established positive working relationships with media a plus.
The position requires a very high level of communication skills, both written and verbal and a demonstrated ability to write for a variety of audiences. Proven ability to work independently and cultivate positive working relationships within the Office of Marketing and Communications, across all levels of the University and with members of the media are required for success.
The position requires a high degree of independent thinking and the ability to be self-directed and react/respond quickly and effectively in rapidly-changing environments. The role also requires the ability to assess the value of a media opportunity and ways to best maximize outcomes for the University. The successful candidate will have an understanding of the immediate nature of working with the media and will have high-level organizational skills to ensure deadlines are met.
Candidate must demonstrate diplomacy, sensitivity, confidentiality and flexibility to accomplish goals. Candidate must be able to handle sensitive and/or confidential issues. The Media Relations Manager will also serve as a spokesperson when deemed appropriate by supervisor.

Must be able to serve as enthusiastic member of the department, work as part of a team and support the needs of colleagues. Must possess the ability to inspire confidence needed to represent the department well to various schools and departments and maintain effective working relationships with the University community.
