There is an opportunity for a Media Relations Specialist to join University of Akron's Communications & Marketing team.
An essential part of a team that enhances the positive reputation of the University, its faculty, staff, and students by seeking all opportunities to develop stories of compelling public interest and proactively provide information to members of the general public, diverse media, and various constituencies. Cultivate positive relationships throughout the University as well as with news media representatives utilizing contemporary modes of communication for advancing the University's public image.
Search for, identify, evaluate and develop newsworthy stories to enhance the reputation of the University and support marketing and student recruitment efforts. This function includes writing news releases, media advisories and stories for internal communications/web and writing effective pitches to media outlets.
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with key faculty, administrators, students and others within the University community and build ongoing communication between these newsmakers and media relations staff. Also build relationships with media representatives and assist as needed in responding to media requests for information, experts and interview opportunities. Like other media relations staff, this role requires 24/7 availability to respond to media requests and/or assist in emergency or crisis communications.
Monitor and analyze media coverage of University of Akron and competitive university exposure, utilizing appropriate technology, and remain informed about higher education issues impacting UA staff, faculty and students, using such information to guide media relations strategy and outreach.
Assist with the development and promotion of special events designed to generate positive media coverage of the University. Provide mentorship and support to student interns and assistants in the communications/marketing department.
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in media relations or related communications field.
Highly personable and able to form trusting relationships quickly required.
Possess excellent oral and written communications skills, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask and respond quickly and professionally under pressure and in crisis situations.
Be facile with digital technology and familiar with the use of social media for effective communications required.
Must possess interviewing skills as well as a strong familiarity with various typed of media.
Must have ability to prepare and disseminate information to the internal college and university communities as well as to diverse media required.
