The University of Connecticut’s School of Engineering (UConn Engineering) seeks an experienced Writer/Editor to provide advanced level writing and editing for a wide range of written materials and to assist in the development of an overall communication strategy for the School. Under the general direction of a designated supervisor, the successful candidate will be expected to develop, write and edit news articles, press releases, concept papers, brochures, and website and social media content that are designed to inform target audiences about UConn Engineering programs.
Incumbents are expected to exercise originality, creativity and to regularly develop his/her own ideas and strategies within broad guidelines established by the supervisor. Work is usually difficult, varied and requires a sound understanding of subject and target audience. Work may also include writing for radio or video scripts.
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least two years of writing experience in a professional capacity.
Advanced writing and grammatical skills, as demonstrated by writing samples; writing ability suitable for radio or video may be required.
Ability to meet deadlines, take initiative and work independently to carry out difficult assignments.
Advanced communication and interpersonal skills.
Basic knowledge of graphic design and awareness of graphic needs of publications.
Experience developing communication strategies for an organization.
Experience writing on scientific topics.
Experience in writing speeches, video scripts, and collateral pieces.
Experience in conceiving Web navigation/architecture as well as web content.
Familiarity with social media.
Experience in writing nominations for awards and recognitions.
Experience in interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Experience working in a university environment.
