The Director of Development and Communications is responsible for developing and implementing Safe Harbour’s initiatives and efforts to procure community donations and grant funding to support organizational operations and to promote the organization’s mission of providing housing and supportive services to homeless and nearly homeless individuals and families to help them achieve independent living by increasing their basic life skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Development and Communications will:
Provide management and direction for fundraising strategies including the Annual Campaign, corporate and foundation fundraising, special events fundraising, grant writing and administration, and in-kind donation drives. Working in partnership with the President and CEO, provide leadership for the creation and enhancement of fundraising initiatives;
Develop and implement effective individual solicitation, direct mail, and crowdsource fundraising strategies;
Establish annual development giving goals and initiate Annual Campaign giving, including monitoring progress of development campaigns;
Process donations and prepare acknowledgement letters and related correspondence;
Develop, organize, coordinate, publicize and execute all fundraising special events, including securing venues, determining sponsors or donors, developing target participation, enlisting volunteers, establishing advertising, and identifying and obtaining guest speakers;
Develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan to increase awareness about Safe Harbour’s mission and its needs utilizing various external resources, including, but not limited to, website, social media, video, news releases, brochures, and print and broadcast news media;
Oversee, develop, write, and submit grant proposals for corporate, foundation, governmental and private grant opportunities. Research and initiate grant funding opportunities;
Develop, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive volunteer program to identify and engage community members who are interested in providing time and talent to assist Safe Harbour with activities such as building maintenance, childcare, special events, and in-kind donation drives;
Develop and maintain donor and communication mailing distribution lists;
Collaborate with designated staff and outside vendors to organize and execute all mailings and communications successfully and in a timely manner;
Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential individual donors, corporations, and foundations;
Attend public appearances and speaking engagements to provide information about Safe Harbour, its mission, and its needs to interested organizations, groups and the general public;
Attend community events, meetings, and other opportunities as assigned by the President as a representative of Safe Harbour to ensure continuous visibility of the organization and its mission, goals, and needs; and
Perform special projects as assigned by the President.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree;
A minimum of three years experience in fundraising;
Knowledge of fundraising trends and crowdsource fundraising tactics;
Basic knowledge of tax implications of charitable giving;
Strong written and verbal communications, relationship management, and interpersonal skills;
Ability to engage and motivate volunteer groups and teams in meetings and other structured events toward an end goal;
Knowledge of social media tools and strategies;
Ability to multi-task and work under tight deadlines;
Ability to work non-traditional hours, including weeknights and weekends;
Experience and expertise with the Microsoft Office Suite software; and
Completion of a successful child abuse and criminal background check.
