The Communication Coordinator at the Buffett Institute for Global Studies supports the communication team with execution of overall communications, including: updating the Institute’s websites; creating and sending several e-newsletters; supporting social media efforts; and promoting events and programs created by the Institute and more than 30 groups, sub-centers, and programs. The Coordinator stays in regular contact with a large number of members of the Buffett Institute community.
Working Conditions: With advanced notice, will be occasionally required to attend events and conferences outside of normal business hours.
Website management: Under the direction of the senior communication staff, performs day-to-day updates to the Institute’s websites to keep content fresh and compelling. Using templates, creates mini-sites for groups as needed. Posts stories written by communication staff. Follows SEO best practices.
Email marketing: Manages several e-newsletters, including a weekly digest of events and programs; a listing of professional development opportunities for students; and research news updates for a variety of audiences. Uses a web-based interface (MailChimp) to create and manage e-newsletters. Stays in regular contact with multiple groups and individuals who organize these programs and events.
Event and Program promotion: Helps publicize a high volume of talks, workshops, and conferences. Using templates, creates announcements, flyers, banners, and website postings. Regularly updates PlanIt Purple, the university’s events calendar. Drafts event-related social media content, and fills in for social media postings when social media manager is away from the office.
Photos and media: As requested, takes digital photos of a variety of people and events, using Photoshop to edit and manage them. Conducts image searches on- and offline. Obtains copyright and audiovisual release forms as needed. Assists hired photographers and videographers. Helps to augment and maintain the Institute’s photo database by ensuring proper storage and quick retrieval of digital images and other media files.
Information Coordination: Organizes information for the communication team, including updating a CRM, serving as the point person for programs and affiliates, and staying on top of dates of events, grant deadlines, etc. Monitors affiliated groups’ social media, websites, and reports to stay on top of their activities.
General communication support: Collaborates with the Communication Team on editing, some writing, fact-checking, and proofreading for a variety of print and online materials, in accordance with assigned deadlines. Follows AP, University, and in-house style guidelines. Ensures that content is free of spelling and grammatical errors, and meets the Institute’s standards for accuracy and factual rigor. Identifies accompanying images, graphics, and hyperlinks; and sources/produces the related content. Adapts existing content to other digital media and print formats. Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, news media, journalism, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
1-2 years applicable work experience, such as communication, social media, and/or writing.
Demonstrated experience in writing and editing content for the web and social media.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Well versed in AP style, with a sharp eye for grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Experience with a Content Management System (CMS).
Knowledge of SEO and SEM.
Able to set priorities, organize workflow, work independently on assigned projects, and collaborate in a hard-working, small-team environment, demonstrating an exceptional work ethic and following through on initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Master’s degree in communication or marketing.
3-5 years applicable work experience, such as communication, social media, and/or writing.
Experience working with university faculty and students.

Proficiency in HTML.
Familiarity with Adobe products, including Photoshop and InDesign.
Professional experience with social media.
Experience with MailChimp, or other web-based email marketing service.
Demonstrated interest in international studies, global engagement, and/or social justice.
