Do you want to help tell the stories of world-class Carnegie Mellon University faculty, researchers and creative minds? The Department of English within the Dietrich School is seeking to add a Media Coordinator to their team.
Your responsibilities will include:
Maintaining and enhancing the English department's website using the CMU Content Management System, including writing news articles and event announcements, reviewing and updating existing information content.
Serving as webmaster, monitoring requests from readers and working with collaborators to gather accurate information and suggestions for improvement, interviewing subjects for articles and videos, gathering images, attending certain high-profile English events for reporting, and documenting protocol decisions and changes.
Using web stories to produce e-newsletters for English students, staff, faculty and alumni.
Seeking out and develop ideas and communication plans to advance the visibility of the department and its faculty, students and alumni.
We are looking for someone who has excellent written, visual and verbal communication skills in addition to excellent interpersonal skills in order to positively interact with faculty, administrators and members of the media and public; excellent time management skills and have the ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities and meet inflexible deadlines; an understanding in effectively using all social media channels to share news and engage audiences; the ability to plan and promote events; video and photo editing skills; and have excellent editing and proofreading skills.
Bachelor's degree in related field preferred
At least 1 to 3 years experience with writing, editing and proofreading in a public relations setting required, previous experience communicating for an academic institution preferred
Accurately communicates complex research findings and academic ideas to a general audience
Excellent time management and prioritization skills
Manages multiple projects at a time
Superb skills in written and oral communication, reasoning, problem-solving, analytical and organizational
Extremely trustworthy with a high level of integrity and shows good and appropriate judgment in deciding on story ideas and how they should be framed and featured
Media relations experience required
Ability to work after hours and on weekends when needed
Advanced photo and video editing skills preferred
