The Senior Communications Officer for Science works within Harvard Public Affairs and Communications, the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, and the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology to develop and implement communications strategies to support and advance science-related initiatives, priorities and activities across Harvard University and Harvard Stem Cell Science.
Reports to: Assistant Vice President of Communications, Harvard Public Affairs & Communications (HPAC) Executive Directors of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology (known collectively as Harvard Stem Cell Science)
Working with colleagues in HPAC, the Provost's Office, and Harvard Stem Cell Science, responsibilities include:
Strategic Communications Planning: Works with colleagues in HPAC, the Provost's Office, Harvard Stem Cell Science and other senior administrators, faculty, and communications officers across the university to develop and implement communications strategies to promote and amplify the university's science, biomedicine, health, and technology initiatives. S/he will stay abreast of Harvard's work in these fields and identify and leverage opportunities to generate positive news in these areas.
Media Relations: Collaborates with colleagues at various Harvard University schools and institutes, coordinating the release of news about science, responding to press inquiries on science matters, and proactively pitching stories to the press with a particular focus on University science initiatives and Harvard Stem Cell Science. S/he works directly with campus media and external media, developing and maintaining relationships with international, national, regional, local and vertical news media. Aids in the organization and management of press events and helps prepare faculty, senior administrators, and other spokespersons for science-related media opportunities. Will also work as part of the HPAC team to ensure coordination with other university, school and center media relations efforts.
Message/Content Development: Develops key messages and creates public statements, press releases, talking points, FAQs, and briefing and other materials in support of the University's research and efforts in science, including data science, life science, global health, engineering and more. S/he will also research and write news stories, feature articles, and profiles for internal and external audiences.
This content will also include the Harvard Stem Cell Institute's digital presence, including its website, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube channels, as well as other emerging platforms. S/he will also identify opportunities for creating high-impact content that helps underscore the breadth and depth of Harvard's contributions to science, such as science-oriented Facebook Live interviews, Instagram stories, news articles, multimedia features, electronic newsletters, and more.
Management & Coordination: The Senior Communications Officer for Science will oversee a communications manager at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and will partner with additional colleagues at the Stem Cell Institute, the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, Harvard Public Affairs and Communications, the Provost's Office, and Harvard's many schools, centers and institutes that conduct scientific research.

Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, public relations, or related field is required as is 8 years of progressive experience in communications, science communications, marketing, or related field. Demonstrated experience in science writing and science-related public relations, leveraging and integrating a variety of media, including print, online, multimedia, and social media, are required. Experience developing communications strategies, managing media relations, and serving as a spokesperson.
Exceptional written and verbal communications skills are required. Demonstrated ability to develop stories and narratives to promote science in creative ways through a variety of media. A solid grasp of technology and understanding of scientific trends and applications. Must be able to provide sound strategic communications advice, demonstrate excellent judgment on complex issues, and successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously, working with numerous clients and stakeholders, under pressure of deadlines.
Must have the ability to innovate, think strategically and conceptually, listen carefully, as well as to advise senior leaders effectively and influence and persuade others.
Demonstrated experience as a strong manager, collaborator and team builder and an ability to work effectively within a highly-decentralized environment. The position also requires an extremely high level of professionalism, sound and mature judgment, and collegiality. Must have excellent planning, project management and organizational skills. Master's degree is preferred as experience with photography and videography.
