The Rockefeller University seeks an Assistant Editor to join Communications and Public Affairs. The Assistant Editor will produce content for printed and online projects of the Office of Communications and Public Affairs (CPA), including an internal newsletter, news releases, web pages, external publications and special projects. Will work with other members of our editorial team to develop engaging stories that meet specific strategic needs, ensure that university publications maintain the highest quality and style consistency, and keep internal communications projects on track. In addition to internal communications projects, the Assistant Editor will be a key contributor to a suite of new and revamped publications, and will also contribute to the activities of the media relations and digital strategy groups. The Assistant Editor will be a significant contributor to the university's annual and periodical publications and will interface with faculty and staff throughout the community to provide support for a wide variety of editorial projects. Specific responsibilities include researching, writing, and editing copy for the internal newsletter and overseeing its publication online and in print, writing for print and online publications for external audiences, proofreading a wide variety of office materials, researching and writing news stories and other content, as well as processing and updating existing copy for the Web, contributing to the university's social media presence, preparing event materials including programs and speaker bios, compiling and fact-checking data for the university's online calendar, and other duties as assigned, including occasional administrative or general office support functions.
Bachelor's degree in in journalism, communications, or a related field and two to four years of relevant work experience, preferably in a publishing or public relations setting required. Proficiency with desktop publishing software, HTML, and content management systems required. Science coursework and/or interest in biosciences is a strong plus, as is experience working in an academic or nonprofit setting. Must be a talented wordsmith, capable of creating clear, compelling, concise and accurate copy, as well as a collaborative editor who can work with other members of a team to develop engaging stories that meet specific strategic needs. Must have excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to work independently under deadline constraints, and a high level of creativity. Sharp proofreading skills and acute attention to detail are musts, as is the ability to represent the office professionally and confidently among a diverse group of personalities including administrators and faculty.
