The Research Associate (RA) reports to and works under the general direction of HBS faculty in conjunction with the administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. The RA for this position will work closely with a faculty member in the Strategy Unit, on projects that span a range of topics covering content, media, technology, and strategy.
The work by the RA will include: extracting and analyzing large-scale datasets, creating summary analyses of important trends in media and technology businesses; creating original written materials; and contributing to scholarly research projects including but not limited to journal articles, working papers, existing cases, and presentations.
Ideal RA candidates will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of intellectual curiosity, independent analysis, and the ability to use discretionary judgment.
Extract, manage, and analyze large-scale data using software packages (e.g, Stata) and simpler spreadsheet manipulation (e.g., in Excel); create presentations in Word and PowerPoint; develop, synthesize, and analyze data that may be used in academic journal articles; assist in writing notes and HBS cases; be facile with social media platforms; and strive to stay abreast of and analyze current issues in media and technology businesses by conducting online searches on articles, news, and business financials.
Position requires strong skills in data analysis, project management, and business analysis. Independently manage all timelines and deliverables. Exercise independent decision making with regard to progression of research project and methodologies. Must be able to structure assignments and keep faculty member closely informed as necessary, using own judgment.
Ensure compliance with department, University, and federal regulations. Complete work with only general direction. Be aware of department, School, University policies and potential outside research policies.
This is a full-time, 1-year term appointment starting as soon as possible through June 30, 2018, with potential for reappointment.

Bachelor's degree required; Computer Science, Statistics, or Applied Mathematics with Economics/Business exposure preferred. Ideal candidate would have strong data analysis and writing skills; and a strong interest in the areas of media, technology, and strategy.
The candidate must have extremely high standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, strong organization skills, and absolute commitment to task completion. He or she must be able to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines at an accelerated pace when necessary.
Evidence of outstanding academic achievement and excellent writing skills. Indication of training and skills in data management and analysis. Proven ability to work independently and creatively. All candidates will be expected to submit sample coding to be reviewed by and discussed with an HBS statistician.
