The University of Michigan is seeking a qualified Writer to develop and execute a wide range of editorial projects for external and internal audiences including composing marketing communications, developing content for Academic Innovation Initiatives, and implementing communications strategies for the Office of Academic Innovation.

This new position is an exciting role, working within a fast-paced team to develop, support and launch new digital learning initiatives through collaboration with our world-class faculty of the University of Michigan. This position reports to the Associate Director of Marketing under the leadership of the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Innovation. The incumbent will design and develop communications across Academic Innovation initiatives including the Academic Innovation website, email marketing efforts, social media, events communication, and guide additional efforts aligned with the mission and goals of Academic Innovation. Write compelling content using Academic Innovation brand voice and style that meets established goals and expectations
Generating, researching and identifying ideas for stories that highlight students, faculty, staff and alumni that are working on efforts that advance the mission and vision of Academic Innovation
Coordinate and implement a communications plan and strategies for the Office of Academic Innovation, including communications using the Academic Innovation website, blog, partner websites, MailChimp, social networking applications, etc.
Participate in ongoing design and management of the website and related user experience
Write communications for the Office of Academic Innovation and its portfolio of initiatives to be disseminated to the broader community, and identify appropriate delivery methods, including but not limited to case studies, press releases, blog posts, presentations, targeted email outreach, social media campaigns, and newspaper articles
Prepare follow-up materials for event attendees and donors
With input from the team, source and edit content including interviews and/or guest content with deans, faculty, students and alumni, and inquiries to ensure published pieces are accurate and relevant
In collaboration with the Marketing Specialist, develop email communications including updates regarding new Initiatives, events, and other content updates
Assist with reviewing and editing landing page copy including language for the Academic Innovation website and course content on partner websites, as well as posting content to the Academic Innovation website
Provide training and technical assistance to academic and community partners to ensure the effective use of the communications developed
Developing content that supports the fundraising efforts of the Academic Innovation team including feature and news stories focused on the impact of giving, annual giving communications around solicitations and campaigns and collateral content
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or another relevant field
Minimum 5 years additional experience in communications, media relations, or other relevant field
Excellent communication, organization and planning skills
Experience in coordinating and developing communications across a variety of marketing channels
Ability to effectively communicate technical information to a non-technical audience through appropriate delivery methods (e.g., printed documents, newspaper articles, eNewsletter, web pages, etc)
Experience interacting with media representatives
Expertise in using web-based tools and technologies (e.g., Google Analytics, MailChimp, social networking applications and media sharing sites) and website content management software
Understanding of information architecture, social media, site structure, file organization and related best practices
Experience using Adobe Creative Suite software, particularly Photoshop and InDesign
Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities and take initiative, while keeping supervisor and project leads in the loop
Demonstrated initiative, independent judgment, diplomacy, and service-oriented attitude
Strong commitment to teamwork and problem solving, as well as the ability to act independently
Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
Ability to manage workload under time constraints and conflicting demands
Ability to work well in a multicultural and collaborative environment
Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, English, or another relevant field
Familiarity with academic/University-based communications, procedures and processes
Experience managing and editing communications within WordPress
Ability to take, edit, format and organize photos
