Alumni News Editor:Produce the Peer Review section, which includes class news, for four print issues per year. Write and edit copy. Work with a designer to lay out the section using InDesign. Cut or add sidebars as necessary to fit space. Enter final corrections into the layout and upload completed files to the printer.Write and produce Short List, the primary biweekly e-newsletter for 150,000-plus UChicago alumni, parents and friends. Choose mix of stories, write blurbs and headlines, prepare newsletter for digital production. Collaborate with colleagues across ARD during the editing process.Work with a team of 60-plus volunteers who serve as the Magazine's class correspondents, setting deadlines and helping them solicit class news. Edit the columns that the class correspondents submit?approximately 20 printed pages per issue?for consistency with Magazine style, correct usage, logical sense and appropriate content. Ensure accuracy of all materials with assigned fact-checker.Write class news for alumni who do not have a class correspondent from materials submitted by alumni. Find appropriate art for the Peer Review section, including identifying archival photos pertinent to different class years to publish as sidebars and write captions. Write Notes for short alumni news items, Releases pages for alumni books, films and recordings and obituaries for the Deaths section. Attend story- and issue-planning meetings. Participate in line editing, copyediting, fact-checking and proofreading of features and other Magazine departments. Assist in researching art. Secure art use permissions. Read several drafts of all Magazine materials, looking for consistency of style, correct usage, concision and clarity. Review Google alerts and other news sources to identify story ideas for upcoming issues. Monitor the Magazine's main email account and respond to a high volume of telephone, email and mail requests, working closely with the editor of the Magazine. Coordinate campus distribution of finished magazines. Manage the Magazine's campus and local advertising programs, record advertisement reservations and bill advertisers. Assists editors throughout ARD Communications with other projects as assigned, including web stories and social media, donor proposals, and stories for other department publications. May oversee the work of freelancers, editorial assistants and student assistants. May write other articles as assigned.Perform other duties as assigned. Seek opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance, including building networks within the University and with colleagues at peer institutions.
