The managing editor, reporting to the editorial director, is responsible for the planning and production for the award-winning quarterly Holy Cross Magazine both in print and online. The managing editor also serves as an integral part of the broader content team in the Office of College Marketing and Communications, sharing the Holy Cross story in support of the College's strategic marketing priorities.
With the editorial director, sets the editorial vision for the College's flagship alumni publication, Holy Cross Magazine, in print and online, and collaborates with divisions across campus to strengthen the effectiveness of the magazine as a compelling general interest magazine and stewardship piece to connect alumni with the College. Plans and develops content to engage the magazine's primary audience of alumni, through assigning, writing and editing content, managing freelancers and vendors, and collaborating with other College stakeholders. Ensures quality in editorial, design and production (printing and delivery) of Holy Cross Magazine. Brings creative ideas that advance the quality of the Magazine and online news content. Collaborates with Social Media Manager to plan and execute social media for the publication. Manages budget for freelance writers and photography as well as for production and distribution of the magazine. Collaborates with other members of the College Marketing & Communications staff on major events, initiatives, and publications. Understands and supports the College's mission. Work to distinguish the College as a leading Catholic, Jesuit, liberal arts college dedicated to preparing the whole student. Serves as a positive, knowledgeable representative of the content team, fostering and strengthening relationships with students, faculty and staff. Is committed to teamwork and excellence.
B.A. in English, journalism, communications, or related field plus 5-7 years increasing experience in a magazine environment Expert project management skills and experience in print publication production. Strong writing, editing skills and understanding of AP style. Demonstrated experience in budgeting, negotiations and managing transactions. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with senior leaders as well as department and cross-college colleagues. Demonstrated experience in developing great stories from concept to publication; strong design sensibility. Ability to meet daily deadlines, handle multiple projects simultaneously and shift priorities when necessary. Proficiency in Microsoft Word; proficiency in Mac platforms, with knowledge of Adobe InDesign. Experience in a newsroom or other publication experience preferred. Experience managing social media and using Drupal and Wordpress a plus.
