Description: The Associate Vice President of Communications reports to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement. The individual in this position acts as a strategic and practical advisor to the Vice President and is responsible for the execution of the College's communications plans for promoting the College and its mission. He or she will lead a team to raise the awareness and reputation of Emerson College as the global hub for the arts and communications in higher education.

Required Knowledge: Proven ability to motivate, inspire and coach a team with disparate backgrounds and skills.Experience in effectively managing a communications function and professional staff.Demonstrated ability to think, plan and execute proactively and strategically with successful results.Able to effectively develop communications strategies and programs that advance the goals and priorities of a complex organization.Proven crisis communications expertise, from tracking and identification to planning, messaging and front-line participation.Demonstrated expertise in media relations, with the ability to proactively plan and place high-profile stories in prominent international, national, regional and local outlets.Successful experience in using modem communications platforms and channels such as social, digital and interactive media to support institutional objectives.Experience as a spokesperson, including live or on-camera situations.Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate controversial or complicated concepts with poise and professionalismExcellent oral and written communication skills, including confidence in making public presentations before high-level, important audiences.Excellent organizational and project management skills; demonstrated ability to prioritize work and complete projects on time, within budget and of superior quality.Bachelors degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and or experience; Masters preferred.

Required Prior Work Experience: At least 10 years of communications, public relations or media relations experience, preferably managing a diverse team of professionals in a large, complex and dynamic environment.

Understand the strategic priorities of the College; establish communications goals and objectives that advance these priorities.
Create an atmosphere of collaboration and sound working relationships with the schools, units and leadership to become a trusted strategic advisor.
Build, develop, inspire, motivate and manage a team of proactive, effective and dedicated communications professionals.
Provide strategic counsel to campus leaders, including the President, Vice Presidents and Deans on critical media and communications matters.
Develop an entrepreneurial, creative culture that embraces proactive media relations efforts, multiple platforms and channels, unique approaches and processes, and new ideas and technologies.
Take a hands-on, proactive approach to issues management and crisis communications.
Shape and lead media relations planning. Establish relationships with and place content in prominent outlets that generate prominence for the College.
Plan and manage media interviews, press conferences, press credentialing, and editorial visits for the College leadership, including the Office of the President.
Develop strategies and programming that enhance executive and internal communication.
Lead and manage the creation of compelling editorial content such as news, features, magazine articles, opinion pieces, and web-based posts that could be utilized in multiple channels and platforms, electronically, printed or through the spoken word.
Establish protocols and practices for addressing social media conversations, online news and posts, and influencer conversations that may impact Emersons reputation.
Expand Emersons efforts to position faculty and leadership as an active and visible presence in the community, region and nation by strengthening media presence.
Provide communications counsel and strategic services to the schools and units. Provide and enforce guidelines to ensure unit-based work is of high quality and aligns with the College.
Serve on the Emergency Operating Committee and act as a primary contact point in a campus emergency.
Establish protocols, guidelines and policy regarding news and media relations, internal and crisis communication, and editorial style and substance.
Establish and use measurement tools and metrics that demonstrate effectiveness and help align efforts with the Colleges priorities and brand.
Work collaboratively with campus partners to advance successful communications practices and reinforce branding and messaging.
Hire and manage freelance and contracted professionals and firms, including writers, editors, public relations firms and reporters.
Set and manage the communications budget aligned with the priorities of the Office and the College.
Track and anticipate issues that may impact the organization, counsel management on potential crises, take an active role in developing messaging and tactical plans during a crisis situation.
Establish relationships with internal constituents to understand their priorities and align plans and activities accordingly.
Serve as a college spokesperson, as needed and assigned.
Understand how to use social media and emerging digital platforms to advance Emersons brand and recognition.
