The Strategic Communications Specialist is AlexRenew’s principal storyteller, leading the effort to build and protect the organization’s brand and reputation through content creation, ongoing website supervision, and by leading or assisting in the planning and execution of communications projects that have a substantial positive impact on our community. This work includes: Thoughtful daily oversight of website and creation of online visual and written content; supervision of external content and social media consultant; partnering with director to craft key organizational messaging; in partnership with community outreach and education manager, research and write educational content for community education initiatives; research and draft senior executive presentations; write and implement employee communications; write and project manage select award entries and print materials such as brochures, fact sheets, and our annual report; write press materials and opinion pieces; assist with issues management; as needed, support the communications team with event management.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Storytelling and Messaging Development and Execution
Partner with director to create and/or update messaging; draft talk points and Q & A documents for senior leadership as needed.
Create and use videos, photographs, infographics and other visual content for use across mediums.
Write bill stuffers, news releases, annual reports, brochures, fact sheets, letters, opinion pieces, bylined articles, and briefing documents directed to key audiences.
Produce scripts and presentations for senior leaders to present to public and water industry audiences.
Write print water education materials, such as workbooks, basic curricula, and activity sheets.
Produce, with internal and external resources, educational videos.
Ensure consistent, high-quality execution of company announcements.
Online Presence Supervision
Oversee the organization’s website and social media efforts; manage external content and website consultants.
Identify, create, and revise website content to support our core messages.
Write, review, and edit content to ensure our online presence engages target audiences.
Track and create monthly reports on website and social media performance; adjust strategies as needed.
Find and recommend website and social media best practices that may be beneficial to adopt for AlexRenew.
Communications Project Management
Maintain annual awards calendar, assist with recommending awards to enter, and write and coordinate award entries with internal teams and, as appropriate, external consultants.
Manage and execute communications programs that increase the awareness and favorable image of AlexRenew among current and prospective employees.
Execute and continually improve employee communication channels, including semimonthly newsletter, digital signage, and internal presentations for all staff events.
Participate in communications training programs. Share information as requested about position and tasks with communications team. As requested, participates in various outreach activities, such as career panels, community education events, and guided facility tours.

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, or Communications preferred.
Utility communications experience a plus.
Significant experience and proficiency in online writing, copywriting, and business writing desired.
Experience in educational writing – curriculum and materials development -- preferred.
Six (6) years of experience in a communications role desired.
Basic HTML and web publishing skills.
Website and website content management experience.
Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite desired.
Experience creating and editing videos for social media preferred.
Proficiency in creating infographics for print and online content.
Photography skills preferred.
Professional experience using social media to engage target audiences and drive visits to a website.
Proficient in computer software programs Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
A strong commitment to the value of water and the essential work a water resource recovery facility does.
An ability to distill engineering and scientific language into concepts anyone can understand.
Exceptional strategic writing and editing skills.
