The incumbent of the Magazine Publishing Group for AIP has announced his upcoming retirement and AIP is seeking a Senior Director of News and Magazines who is a business development professional with familiarity with and experience in multimedia science content delivery (print, online, mobile, video, etc.) who will oversee AIP news, magazines, and other content areas to find efficiencies to identify new revenue-generating opportunities in science content, and determining value additions. In a collaborative manner, this position will work with AIP divisions in order to leverage the high-quality science content AIP produces for a range of audiences. This position will oversee senior staff in several areas: Editor-in-Chief for Physics Today (with its primarily scientific audience); Editor for Inside Science and Director of Media Services (with its science journalist, science enthusiasts and general public audience); and the Editor of FYI (with its audience of science policy wonks, society leaders, and decision makers).
The primary role of this position will be to work with senior staff and the Senior Director of Strategic Marketing and Communication to further business development of existing products and identify new products to achieve AIP’s goal of producing new revenue and reaching wider audiences while upholding the quality of our content. This Senior Director will use their science publishing background and maximize AIP science content delivery in today’s climate of print, electronic, and social media.
New Business Development - Develop potential new/modified/hybrid products for all AIP news departments (News and Media, PT, FYI, CISE, as well as history newsletters and student magazines) in print and online both domestic and internationally with the goal of producing new revenue sources and serving AIP's Member Societies and other audiences, including the general public.
Continually evaluate the market and opportunities for AIP science content – and seek new distribution channels - with a focus on the future and vision of AIP.
Implement programs leading to the growth of advertising and other revenue for all news editorial products while serving the needs of the current and potential readers (including AIP Member Society members) advertisers, and other audiences. Assess audience interest in additional AIP content (statistical reports, student news and history resources) and develop new delivery mechanisms and potential revenue sources.
Work with senior program staff and marketing to establish editorial goals to meet both editorial and sales objectives. Work with team members to develop reader feedback to sustain the high quality and relevance of science content. Participate in appropriate conferences and events, to stay current with issues affecting publication of science content.
Review and monitor production techniques, printing and distribution costs, and editorial/ad ratios to provide a framework for cost effective mechanical production with the magazine and other AIP content production teams, including news wire services and video news teams. Review and monitor online production techniques for the news, magazines, and other science content products.
Work with the Senior Director for Strategic Marketing and Communication to establish the proper marketing strategies, sales tactics and tools, market research, and promotional campaigns to grow advertising revenues.
Evaluate current and new departmental staffing skill sets and oversee the hiring of staff to meet expectations and goals.
Financial oversight including setting and monitoring budgets and operations for news content areas.Serve as an active member of AIP’s Leadership Team, contributing to the organization’s strategic vision and goals and participating in meetings of AIP’s Board of Directors as appropriate.

Minimum of 10-years’ experience in publishing science news and magazine content, including setting and monitoring budgets.
B.S. degree in business, communications, science or related field; graduate degree preferred (PhD, MBA).
Understanding of business development models for science content delivery.
Understanding of multimedia content delivery for diverse audiences.
Experience with print and online production processes for news, magazines and other types of science content.
Demonstrated ability to direct and manage high-level staff members.
