Chemical Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Communications Manager.
This full-time position supports the activities and events of the Molecular Engineering & Sciences Institute (50%) and the Nano-Engineered Systems Institute (50%). The position is responsible for coordinating the communications program (including electronic and print communications with internal and external stakeholders, content development, news curation, social media) and overseeing execution of Institute events, including research symposia, advisory board meetings, investigator meetings, industry events, and site visits.
Specific responsibilities include:
Internal and External Communications (70%)
Manage communications, marketing, and development approaches for supported Institutes.
Serve as marketing and communications advisor to the directors of educational programs and facilities within supported institutes (i.e, Molecular Analysis Facility, Washington Nanofabrication Facility, MolE Ph.D. program), cross-marketing in Institute materials and publications as appropriate. Manage special projects (e.g., development of collateral, marketing plans, special events) related to these programs and facilities upon request, only as time allows, with approval of supervisor.
Serve as the primary curator and editor of web site content for supported Institutes; ensure content and look remain fresh and fit within UW branding guidelines; and maintain current web governance plan.
Establish and implement social media strategy: Write copy, post interactive content such as photos and videos, curate relevant content from other sources, monitor visitor interaction with page in compliance with University of Washington policy and procedure, monitor and use page statistics to guide future page management. Coordinate with related initiatives, programs, and departments.
Actively manage the website presence of supported Institutes on internet search engines via search engine optimization (SEO) techniques, write site metadata, analyze success rate of strategies.
Work with UW news offices to coordinate placement of stories about Institute members in relevant local, national, and international publications.
Maintain and meet publication schedule for recurring communications (e.g., MolES Informer, Research Update, and Annual Report).
Serve as communications consultant on ad hoc staff research support team created to support the development of major proposals: advise on style, format, and presentation of content; help contract specialized communications and design services as needed; and help coordinate event support for any resulting site visits or evaluations.
Manage production of brand-consistent print collateral, print and electronic invitations and announcements, newsletters and their templates; write news or promotional copy as needed.
Manage identity, mailing and contact lists, and other marketing/outreach efforts of supported Institutes.
Serve as joint supervisor of the 50% MolES-CEI event planner: establish work schedule; conduct performance reviews; ensure job description is up-to-date; and recruit, hire and train when vacancies occur.
Manage staff and resources to ensure successful execution of events and meetings such as external advisory board meetings, research symposia, quarterly Institute socials, corporate affiliates program meetings, site visits, industry events, and annual meetings of investigators.
Maintain strong working relationships in the Office of State Relations, deans' offices, central marketing and communications, advancement, and advisory boards to ensure smooth execution of Institute events and to obtain participation and support of key constituents.
Promote events both externally and internally among appropriate units at the university, college, and department level.
Make effective use of existing Institute and shared UW resources (including space, physical resources, web tools, support) and make recommendations for purchases that promote efficiency and/or cost savings.
Help manage execution and staffing for educational events, orientations, and tours for supported Institutes as needed.
Represent Institutes at appropriate meetings to stay up-to-date on regulations and policies affecting work and seek training opportunities related to marketing and communications.
Other duties as assigned.
This position reports to the Administrator and works closely with other events and communications professionals in the core of collaborative staff that supports related interdisciplinary research units and actively develops shared resources and best practice and collaborates on shared initiatives and events.
Bachelor's Degree in Business, English, Technical Communication, or related field.
Two to three years managing specialized communications programs in an academic research environment.
Advanced knowledge of MS Office: Outlook, Excel, Access, Word.
Working knowledge of Adobe products: Photoshop, Acrobat Professional, InDesign.
Ability to use Facebook and other social media platforms to effectively and responsibly communicate brand message.
Competence in HTML and content management systems; ability to communicate effectively about web and internet related topics with technical and non-technical audiences.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Attentive to detail and able to work independently with limited oversight.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Ability to quickly learn and use new software packages effectively.
Competence in marketing strategy, SEO (search engine optimization) techniques.
