University Human Resources communicates with over 20,000 employees, retirees and postdoctoral scholars, and over 100,000 prospective employees each year. A position in the HR Initiatives group is available for a seasoned writer, editor, and communications manager, who will be responsible for original writing across a range of communication platforms and will initiate, coordinate and implement communications plans/campaigns for UHR departments that support and promote the unit's goals to enhance Stanford's position as the best led, best managed university in the world and as an employer of choice. The writer will contribute social media content, manage communications projects that include developing and implementing comprehensive communication plans/campaigns, will develop presentations and talking points for UHR leaders, write and manage content for UHR websites, edit/proofread the writing of UHR employees outside of HRI as well as vendors, collaborate with graphic designers to bring concepts to life, and ensure the highest standards of quality for every written, online, or print communication piece the position touches. The Information Writer/Editor reports to the Director of Communications, and partners closely with other members of the HR Initiatives group. This is a 100% FTE, benefits-eligible position. NOTE: A professional portfolio is required for interviewed candidates, either in print or online, that showcases original copy writing to create online and/or print communications. Duties & Responsibilities
Draft journalistic-style news articles about organizational activities, ensuring that all content is well written, accurate and consistent with the UHR's strategic goals and brand standards.
Manage aspects of UHR's two quarterly digital newsletters - The Stanford Employee Insider and The Stanford Retiree Insider - including developing story ideas, conducting research and interviews, drafting copy and securing appropriate images, obtaining proper approvals, directing layout, editing all copy and proofs and managing related vendors.
Write social media content based on UHR goals, stay abreast of current trends in use of social media, and provide social media content recommendations.
Write original content including, but not limited to: websites; email announcements; promotional materials such as ad copy; video scripts; reports that highlight Stanford's workplace culture and offerings; and general HR communications such as policy and process documentation, manager resource guides, and program guides.
Ensure unit-wide visual identity standards are implemented, including editorial and design style guides.
Use media appropriately to support and enhance communication, selecting the right media based on the storyline, the themes, the desired emotional response, or based on knowledge of the audience's receptivity to a particular modality. Will create presentations and other support materials; experience managing photographers and graphic designers desired.
Craft detailed communication plans that incorporate key messages for target audiences, identify staging of messages, assessment points, and then lead or support the implementation of that communication plan.
Compose speeches, talking points, and/or info sheets for University HR Vice President and Assoc. VPs. Qualifications, Experience, and Education Sought
Demonstrated experience and expert abilities to write clearly, concisely, accurately and on deadline, write persuasively and develop engaging communications across all communication platforms
Expertise using various communication channels to reach target audiences with content, including websites, social media, print collateral, digital newsletters, ad copy, surveys, essays and executive communications
In-depth skill in editing, including copy editing and proofreading
Experience writing speeches, video scripts, talking points and information/fact sheets
Deep experience managing all aspects of communications projects
Proven ability to develop presentations with various presentation tools (PPT, SlideRocket, etc.); advanced proficiency in Word and PPT, and ability to quickly learn new software/tools to enhance communications
Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, clients, and vendors in the use of written text for print, web, video or email publications to produce the highest quality communication outcomes
8-10 years of copy writing and editing experience, including articles, press releases, policy documents, website content, social media, presentations, videos and speeches
Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred; Journalism or Communications or related area
