The University of Washington Medical Center has an opportunity for a full-time Senior Computer Specialist in a state-of-the art clinical laboratory performing cutting edge clinical chemistry assays. Primary responsibilities will include development of web and database applications, with an emphasis of developing tools for supporting laboratory operations. This position will work closely with faculty members, laboratory staff, and other software engineers. The applicant is expected to be familiar with the complexities of a modern software development environment, including version control software; software design, testing and deployment; authorship and maintenance of documentation; and coordinating activities with other software developers and non-programming staff. Development of applications to support clinical laboratory workflow.
Integration of data from the laboratory system, clinical laboratory, and analytical pipelines.
Help support accurate record-keeping by developing software for clinical laboratory data entry and storage.
Organize data for interpretation.
Examples of applications may include (but are not limited to): applications for generation and distribution of laboratory reports; applications for coordinating activities and supporting within and across laboratories; applications for managing and searching historical laboratory results; web-based decision support tools providing interpretive information for health care providers.
Development and maintenance of data analysis pipelines:
Function as a software engineer to author new software and maintain existing software.
Will execute applications to support clinical testing.
Work on existing pipelines and create new platforms.
Bioinformatics pipelines are developed locally.
Mass spectrometry and automated chemistry testing platforms.
Design and construction of databases for storing and querying laboratory and clinical data.
Create and maintain new and existing databases.
Administration of scientific computing infrastructure.
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline AND 2-3 years of professional experience in software engineering or Bioinformatics.
Experience with Python.
Experience developing software using modern tools and procedures for version control, unit testing, documentation, and code review.
Extensive experience with Linux or other Unix-like environments.
Extensive experience with SQL relational database management systems (particularly postgresql).
Excellent spoken and written communication and documentation skill.
Equivalent education/experience can substitute for indicated minimum qualifications.
Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
Experience in clinical or research laboratories.
LINUX/UNIX system administration.
Experience with cloud computing services such as Amazon AWS.
Experience with Business Process Management systems and frameworks.
Basic understanding of molecular biology, biochemistry, or chemistry concepts.
Experience in development of or contribution to open source projects.
