The Director of Media Relations leads University Communications' efforts to drive strategic media coverage of the University, contributing to key priorities by increasing public understanding of the University's educational mission and impact.The Director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Media and Public Affairs and works with the senior staff of University Communications and other offices across the University to develop strategic goals for media coverage. This role provides leadership for a media team in regular contact with international, national and local media for stories that the University is seeking to bring to a wider audience or defined audiences.This individual will be an experienced media professional who is passionate about moving the University's stories forward with reporters, producers, editors and other media contacts, finding new ways to tell the huge volume of interesting stories from the University of Chicago, one of the world's foremost institutions for research and education. The work will focus on priorities and core messages including research, campus life, financial aid, global engagement, urban scholarship and impact, and the University of Chicago's distinctive academic culture.Essential Functions:� Assemble and oversee a core media team and beat structure for proactive media pitches, working with Communications' content team to build calendar of media opportunities and outreach� Develop strategy for increasing coverage around strategic message pillars� Create and maintain a new 'news engine' function within Communications, sending regular updates to news media about University experts who can contribute to developing stories� Serve as lead contact for senior media relations opportunities for national and international outlets, working with reporters, producers, etc. to pitch stories and arrange interviews with experts� Collaborate closely with content team and subject-area news officers to identify University experts who can address emerging issues in the news� Work across campus to address media needs, developing central competency in media relations that can serve University-wide objectives� Serve as a media advisor for senior communications staff and university leadership� Identify emerging opportunities across diverse media platforms, including print, broadcast, podcasts, blogs, and emerging digital properties� Coordinate with the digital and social media team to produce integrated outreach plans across multiple channels, including earned media, owned media, social media and paid media� Collaborate in strategic planning around University initiatives to create focused and effective media campaigns� Train faculty, students, and staff to work with media; contribute to comprehensive series of faculty communications sessions
