Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Engineering College Relations at Iowa State University is seeking qualified applicants for a Communications Specialist to play a key role in the communications and marketing efforts to advance the mission of the college. The communications specialist will serve as a central resource in the college communications department and also work closely with various engineering departments to help implement their communications needs.
This position will be filled as either a Communications Specialist II or III. The Communication Specialist II's primary responsibilities will include managing communication projects that support strategic initiatives; interviewing faculty, staff, students, donors and alumni to write feature/news/research stories for multiple print and digital platforms and updating and organizing content on one or more websites. Other responsibilities will include basic graphic design for print materials and digital communications; assisting with social media content and posts; and providing support for other communication projects. In addition, a Communication Specialist III will be responsible for college level projects and work with multiple departments to ensure that communication needs are met college wide.
The successful candidate will possess the ability to seek out news and suggest story ideas and work effectively both independently and in a team environment. The successful candidate will have basic graphic design skills, effective management and organizational skills, the ability to work well with a diverse population, and the ability to communicate effectively. All staff members are expected to interact collegially and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
*Degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related field *Experience writing and editing feature and news stories for both print and digital platforms. *Experience managing communications projects from concept through completion. *Experience managing websites in Word Press and organizing content. *Experience working with both print and digital design (page layout and design templates) and basic skills using Adobe Creative Suite.
