Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Media Relations Specialist is responsible for sharing the mission and strategic directions of the university.
Serves as the lead member of the emergency communications response team, and as such facilitates emergency, crisis and critical communications, including weather communications, arranges coverage for emergency communications during major university events (including home football games), and participates in university's Emergency Management Task Force.
Conducts emergency education and training exercises for University Communications, and serves as the key point of contact for Department of Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management staff; manages crisis and critical communications planning for University Communications.
Supervises one employee who assists with crisis and critical communications planning.
Facilitates requests for media interviews; identifies content experts and designates spokespersons, coordinates responses to media and public information requests with Director of University Communications.
Writes news releases as needed.
Informs local and national audiences as well as the campus community about noteworthy university-related accolades and accomplishments.
Develops and promotes stories which highlight Appalachian State University’s outstanding faculty, students, staff, learning environment, and research for print, broadcast and online outlets.
Bachelor’s Degree in public information or related field.
4 to 7 years of demonstrated experience working with print and electronic media.
Demonstrated experience working in crisis communications field, including social media as related to critical/crisis communications.
Completion of FEMA training courses G-290 and G-291, ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400, IS-700, IS-702.
