Hawken seeks an individual with expertise coaching students in several different event categories of speech and debate. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in coaching platform and/or interpretation events. Nationally ranked, our team has more than 100 students, competes locally and travels extensively to tournaments across the country. There are teaching opportunities associated with this position in both the Humanities and Performing Arts Departments.
Assistant Coach for our highly competitive Speech and Debate Team
Assist the Director of the Speech and Debate Team with recruitment and placement of new team members
Provide afternoon coaching support and support during free periods throughout the Speech and Debate season (August through April)
Provide intensive support to students on the team competing at the highest levels in May and June
Take a central role in organizing Hawken's annual Larry Banks Memorial Tournament
Work closely with the head coach / Director of the Speech and Debate Team to manage all financial responsibilities associated with a substantial program budget
Organize the distribution and pursue collection of all travel related forms and permission slips
Assist the head coach in making all travel arrangements for tournaments throughout the year
Assist the head coach in hiring judges and arranging for additional chaperones whenever necessary for tournaments
Attend and judge at all weekend tournaments (local Saturday tournaments and traveling to 2 - 3 day tournaments once or twice each month)
Assist with marketing and communication (including social media) of news related to the team
Teach a Public Speaking and Rhetoric class in our Performing Arts Department
Preference will be given to candidates who can teach or co-teach Humanities, History, and/or Government in our Humanities department
Collaborate with teachers on instruction and assessment of presentation and debate skills
Advise 10-12 students
Actively engage in school life and other duties as assigned

Bachelor's Degree required.
Competent and experienced in best pedagogical practices associated with Speech and Debate
A desire and willingness to try new approaches, embracing a growth mindset for yourself and for students while clearly supporting colleagues to do the same
Passion for designing unique programing and curricula with colleagues in your field and across disciplines
Demonstrated experience in engaging students with a range of learning styles
