We are excited to announce an immediate opening for our Assistant Metro Editor position. This key newsroom position supervised the planning, gathering, evaluation, selection, and presentation of local news coverage across all platforms. The Assistant Metro Editor directs and coordinates the activities of metro reporters, including long-range planning and idea generation/coordination. Successful applicants will possess a mastery with evaluating stories for accuracy, scope, and approach.
Primary Functions & Duties:
Maintain continuous communication with fellow editors and reporters and other departments, taking full advantage of photos, video, graphics, illustrations and databases on all our digital platforms and in print, recognizing that many readers prefer to consume information visually instead of through text.
Ensure the Times is thinking about local news coverage with a digital-first mindset and is engaging readers through social media, chats, user-generated content tools and other means.
Push staffers to keep their digital skills up-to-date, provide the necessary training, and lead by example in this regard. Initiate and oversee staff development.
Help monitor and promote diverse hiring throughout the newsroom by guiding recruitment efforts and working with hiring managers to assure diverse candidate pools.
Oversee the Seattle Times’ Education Lab, a Solutions Journalism-based project that combines in-depth reporting on issues involving education in the region and an ambitious community-engagement effort. That involves everything from social media to in-person events to Ed Lab's guest essays and Student Voices program, as well as biweekly engagement meetings with marketing staff as well as the Traffic Lab and Project Homeless, and making sure that Education Lab reporters track the impact of their work. It also includes some work in the evenings for special events -- whether put on by us, or in partnership with other organizations.
Be willing to work unusual schedules when news coverage or staffing needs demand it.
Excellent grammar, language and computer skills.
Have social media skills, including the ability to use Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn and other emerging social networks to gather and disseminate news, reach new audiences and track the changing social landscape.
Have reader engagement skills, including participation in chats, comments or use of engagement tools on sites such as Reddit.
Analyze facts and make judgments about relevance, newsworthiness, libel, fairness, etc. Ability to write clearly and accurately on multiple platforms.
Have strong news judgment, including an ability to decide quickly and confidently a story’s potential and, later, its strength. Requires a strong level of accuracy, honesty, fairness, and knowledge of libel laws. Must have the ability to find holes in a story, ask the right questions under pressure, and understand story organization and how to achieve it.
Know the tenets of Solutions Journalism, and how to incorporate it into various types of stories.
Innovate: helping The Seattle Times and Solutions Journalism Network explore what Solutions Journalism means when practiced at a daily newspaper.
Work collegially across the newsroom to help The Seattle Times achieve its goals.
Requires at least five years’ experience at a metropolitan daily or other news organization, including supervisory experience.
Requires a bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have strong news judgment, including an ability to decide quickly and confidently a story’s potential and, later, its strength. Requires a strong level of accuracy, honesty, fairness, and knowledge of libel laws.
