JOB DESCRIPTION: The position reports to the Managing Editor of the award-winning Journalist's Resource website. The Research Reporter will write daily summaries of research about public policy. They will participate in all aspects of the work of Journalist's Resource, a dynamic website run by the Shorenstein Center. The website bridges the gap between academic knowledge and the mass media on a wide range of public policy subjects, and has a broad audience comprised of journalists, journalism professors, and the public. The website is a repository of thousands of papers and the content is distributed via Twitter, Facebook and a weekly email. Journalist's Resource recently was named as one of the top, free reference websites by the American Library Association. Visits to the website this year will exceed 3.5 million page-views. The Research Reporter reviews major academic public policy-related journals, selects the most significant new studies, and summarizes their findings for the website. The job requires the writing skills of a daily news reporter & the perspective of a scholarly researcher. In addition, the work involves hands-on website work, vigorous engagement in social media, and outreach to working journalists and scholars.
Job components: Read, understand and summarize academic papers covering the full range of public policy subjects. Must keep up with the daily news and be familiar with social science research methods. Writing about academic knowledge and blending it with news is the crux of the job. Respond to breaking news with academic work helpful to reporters on deadline.
Evaluate, organize and select the topics that will be covered in a given week. Establish a system of alerts and patterns of information-seeking that allow the project to
Bachelor's degree required along with at least five years of journalism-related experience, including at least two years in a newsroom.
Superior research, writing, analytical skills. Must be able to write constantly, clearly, and quickly. Proven project management skills, ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure. Strong copy-editing, excellent organizational abilities and extremely detail-oriented. Masters degree a plus.
Must be proactive and able to complete complex tasks with minimal direction on short deadline. Enthusiasm for new and emerging technologies. Familiarity with HTML, WordPress, PhotoShop, Word, Excel are desirable. Must be resourceful and creative about technical problem-solving. Experience in multimedia reporting desirable. Experience with website management, from the technical/server side to user experience, desirable. Strong professional, interpersonal skills.
