We're the Philadelphia Media Network (PMN), the company behind the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Daily News and Philly.com. Our fast-changing newsroom is committed to telling great stories and deepening our connection with the communities we serve. We’re owned by the non-profit Lenfest Institute for Journalism, and we’re at the very center of the mission to create a lasting future for ambitious local journalism.
The Director of Visuals oversees our photography, videography, graphics and editorial-driven design on all platforms. This is a masthead role in our newsroom — equivalent to a deputy managing editor — with significant strategic and management responsibilities.
There is much work to be done. We’ll be looking for a Director of Visuals who will play a central role in 1) an organization-wide digital rebranding effort, 2) developing the strategy and operations for strong video storytelling and 3) clearly establishing the essential importance of visuals in storytelling, across all platforms.
As a senior manager, you’ll be leading one of the most talented teams in the business. Your operational responsibilities include oversight of the photo, video and graphics desks. In addition, dotted-line relationships with digital producers, print designers and news developers connect you to every desk shaping the look and feel of all newsroom products. Close ties to our Product and Marketing teams are also essential.
In short, we’re looking for a candidate who’s capable of developing visuals strategy, managing a large department and ensuring design fidelity across an array of newsroom platforms. You’ll have extensive support from other senior newsroom leaders, and the opportunity to make a select number of your own hires.
Duties and Responsibilities
Manage photography, video and graphics teams with the aim of producing beautiful, compelling and informative visual journalism on all titles and platforms.
Ensure your team’s work offers a window on the communities we serve, that it reflects their spirit, their personalities, their diversity.
Direct the development of an updated newsroom design style guide, in coordination with Marketing and Product, and ensure that style guide is followed by editorial staff on all platforms.
Develop a scalable video storytelling strategy and the operational structure necessary to support it. This includes the newsroom’s ability to harness external video sources, such as social media and courtesy video from public agencies, as well as reporter-shot video.
Communicate the importance of visual storytelling throughout the newsroom. As more of our journalists handle visuals in their daily work, promulgate and enforce best practices for working with visuals.
Routinely use audience data and feedback to inform visual journalism efforts.
Optimize workflow to better integrate photography into breaking news.
Champion user-contributed content and help to make it a part of our visual offerings.
Ensure quality and consistency of output in a fast-paced news environment.
A minimum of two years experience as a newsroom manager.
Proven track record of engaging audiences through visual journalism.
Strong project management skills.
History of success as a graphics, design or photo editor.
A strong sense of visual design and digital UX.
A passion for visual storytelling and the ability to give specific and actionable feedback on visual work.
A solid understanding of the many platforms and formats in which our visual journalism is consumed and an aptitude for finding ways to optimize effort for maximum impact across platforms — especially in apps and social media.
A knack for applying the latest tools and technologies to problems of newsgathering, workflow, design and user experience.
