Reporting through the Vice President for Public Affairs, the Communication Specialist functions in an allied role between the Division of Public Affairs and the University President in the research and composition of official presidential. Communication includes speeches, statements, reports, presentations, correspondence and other such materials. The Communication Specialist must practice the highest levels of professionalism, sensitivity, trust and confidentiality given the reality of sensitive and delicate assignments. While this position reports to the Vice President, regular job assignments will routinely originate with the President.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.
Plans, develops, organizes and manages all tasks to accomplish the highest levels of efficiency and effectiveness.
Effectively supports presidential media relations and applies proven communication strategies and techniques to help accomplish favorable institutional exposure.
Prepares speeches, statements, reports, presentations, correspondence, articles and other materials requiring rigorous fact checking, editing and consultation with other offices and individuals both internal and external to the University.
Stewards written projects through to completion in close adherence to deadlines and project flow to accomplish desired objectives.
Works discreetly on sensitive or delicate assignments, exercise sound editorial judgement and perform in such a way as to protect the trust and confidence of the President, cabinet leadership and administrative officials.
Oversees a variety of digital communication channels (social, video, on-line, electronic) on behalf of the President; functions as the primary person for the President's social media communication to include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
In all communication endeavors, accurately and effectively represents the President's voice and style.
In cooperation with applicable Public Affairs' personnel, manages the website for the Office of the President including posting content of speeches, statements and updating links to relevant stories and media posts.
Tracks upcoming events to ensure the necessary research and background information are acquired so that the President is prepared to make effective and relevant statements and presentations.
Actively researches news articles, press releases, websites and other information sources to harvest data essential to effective job performance.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
Supports general office operations in the Office of the President and the Office of Vice President for Public Affairs.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, public relations, marketing, or other academic discipline considered appropriate for job responsibilities.
A minimum of five (5) years of related experience in communication, speech writing, professional writing, technical writing or related work.
Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training deemed appropriate for the position.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Demonstrated writing skills to accomplish both grammatical and factual communication.
Self-directed with the ability to consistently produce high-quality, prompt and reliable work while preserving confidential standards.
Skilled in the use of contemporary communication tools and methods.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to effectively interact with individuals at all levels of the University and favorably represent the President and Vice President of Public Affairs.
Initiative, confidence and charisma to effectively engage others.
Ability to investigate, analyze and draw appropriate conclusions to problems and issues.
Proficiency with common computer applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
Physical and Mental Abilities Required
Ability to concentrate, comprehend and analyze complex topics and issues and exercise sound judgment.
The duties and responsibilities of this position must be performed in a competent manner following the highest standards for professionalism, integrity, confidentiality, accountability, responsibility, cooperation and customer service.
Salary Grade: 107 Salary Range: $38,000 - $45,000
