Media Relations Specialist is a communications specialist who will enhance media coverage of Cornell University through an aggressive program of media relations. The MRS services media requests, develops, writes and pitches story ideas to journalists, arranges interviews, organizes and hosts media events in alignment with University goals; and facilitates contacts between university faculty, administration and students with journalists in the national, international and local/regional news media. The Media Relations Specialist visits news media outlets to make personal contacts, and helps maintain current experts' lists for the Media Relations Office. The MRS also assists in scouting and researching story ideas, spotting trends, developing relationships with journalists and placing stories and commentaries as directed to maximize media coverage and visibility of Cornell University. Partners with New Media Officer on social media strategy and execution. Works with the Senior Director of Media Relations and News, the VP of University Relations and senior leadership on official university responses to media requests. Rotates with other MRS as on-call liaison between media and University for immediate response to emergency and crisis situations. The MRS also advises on media strategies, writes briefings and conducts media training for faculty, staff, students and administration. The Media Relations office is a 24/7 office and the MRO staff rotate an on-call schedule for emergencies.
Bachelor's degree and three to five years' experience in journalism/communications and speaking with media, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated excellence in writing and editing. Excellent verbal skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and with a diverse population.
Must have demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and strong writing capability. Must work well in a fast-paced environment and establish and maintain effective, positive, working relationships with other employees, media representatives, the public, and other interested and affected parties.
Must have working knowledge of broadcast and web-based news operations. Must have understanding of 24-hour news cycle and media markets.
Experience in, or demonstrated interest in, one or more of the following is desirable: university affairs, local and national affairs, international affairs, humanities, science/technology, life sciences and event management.
Working experience in a professional media news setting, including on-deadline reporting.
Experience in, or demonstrated ability to, draft media releases from primary or secondary sources, plan interviews and media events; and develop and coordinate, with the direction of the director, media outreach campaigns in Ithaca and at remote locations as needed.
