The Integrated Pest Management Program within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences seeks applications for a Communication Specialist II responsible for supporting IPM programming efforts through public relations and developing/delivering educational information through a variety of channels including social media, websites and video. These efforts will promote the IPM programming in Iowa, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Under the leadership of IPM staff, the communications specialist will work closely with ISU faculty and staff and peer institutions to develop, disseminate and promote IPM information grounded in research-based science to targeted audiences. This position will develop multi-channel social media outreach; write video script and direct video content; edit and post information to websites; write news releases; plan, edit, write, and distribute print and electronic publications; develop brochures and flyers; and professionally convey information to targeted audiences through audio and video formats. In addition this position will also need to hire, supervise and train student workers and interns for communications projects.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work as part of a creative communications team, be organized and detailed-oriented, and work in a fast-paced environment adjusting workflow to meet deadlines and budgets. Additionally, the successful candidate must demonstrate their knowledge of AP and Chicago Style Manual writing style, and possess excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. The candidate must be comfortable speaking in front of an audience or a camera. The candidate should be familiar with office software (e.g., Microsoft Office or Google Docs), desktop publishing (e.g., Adobe InDesign), social media (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram), video editing (e.g., Adobe Premier Pro), and web-based content management software tools (e.g., WordPress or Drupal).
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelor Degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Communications or closely related field and related experience.
Experience using video, social media, and related tools for strategic promotion.
Experience in researching, editing, and writing science-based content for print, web, and video.
Experience using computer applications including MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite.
Experience with web-based content management systems for website development.
All accrued vacation must be taken during the term of this appointment. Unused vacation will be forfeited.
