Under the leadership of Artistic Director Diane Paulus and Executive Director Diane Quinn, the American Repertory Theater aims to expand the boundaries of theater and engage thousands of theatergoers at more than 200 performances and events each season.
The Marketing and Communications department is responsible for building the organizational brand and implementing sales and media strategies that result in more than $5MM in annual earned revenues.
Duties & Responsibilities: Reporting to and working closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications, this position will manage the daily operations of media and public relations including the handling of external inquiries, media requests, and public relations issues and opportunities in order to promote A.R.T. productions and messaging. This position plays a key role as the primary liaison with internal and external constituents to promote topics including seasonal programming, special events, major gifts, incoming staff, and more. Collaborates with the Director of Marketing and Communications and others to develop and implement strategies, policies, and procedures for effective organizational communication, conferring with external public relations consultants as needed. Oversees execution of communications strategy by drafting and ensuring the quality and integrity of all press releases, official statements, interviews including prepping and coaching, and associated public and media relations activities, working closely with theater's executive team, Harvard affiliates, artists, and other external stakeholders as needed. Draft correspondence and advise Artistic Director and Executive Director on talking points, serving as A.R.T.'s spokesperson as needed. Foster institutional relationships with industry and media leaders. Work with the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications and other members of the marketing team to coordinate traditional media and social media messaging. Handle internal communications, partnering with senior management team to draft announcements and disseminate news about the priorities and activities of the A.R.T. Liaise with Development staff to monitor communication efforts related to donor stewardship. Additional specific duties include securing feature stories and reviews in local, regional, national, and international media; developing and maintaining effective relationships with journalists and editors; generating story ideas and pitching them to appropriate reporters; coordinating photography for media needs including archive; and organizing crisis communications as necessary.
Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required. Writing samples required.

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
Bachelor's degree; and three years of related experience managing public relations and marketing functions at a nonprofit or arts organization.
Knowledge of theater and performing arts preferred. Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated project management, strategic thinking, and leadership skills required. Relevant experience managing media relationships and community outreach efforts. Ability and willingness to stay abreast of emerging technologies and seek out new opportunities to advance the institutional mission. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Photoshop; Strong working knowledge of HTML, InDesign, Illustrator, Tessitura (CMS) database a plus. Represent the organization at meetings and functions critical to the successful and positive visibility of the A.R.T.
