| Advertised Summary Job Description: Reporting to the Director of Public Affairs, the Public Affairs Associate serves as the preliminary point of contact for members of the press seeking expert legal opinion from Columbia Law School's community of scholars. S/he also plays a key role in promoting news about the Law School with a focus on faculty scholarship and new institutional initiatives. The Public Affairs Associate serves as an integral member of the Law School's Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs department, which communicates ideas and information across media channels to engage external and internal audiences in the vibrant intellectual life and global community of Columbia Law School. As such, the Associate will work collaboratively with colleagues and a broad range of internal stakeholders. |
Under the supervision of the director, the Public Affairs Associate promotes the expertise/scholarship of the Law School's faculty, and develops, researches, and pitches stories to national and international media on a variety of subjects.
The Associate cultivates relationships with journalists covering a wide range of relevant beats, from national security and human rights to law and economics of global markets and climate change law, to name a few. In addition, the position fields and handles a steady stream of press calls and inquiries, and arranges interviews.
The position also develops and writes news content for the Law School's website and social media platforms, from Q&As with faculty on topical issues to stories about new research, programs, events, and announcements. In addition, the Associate will assist faculty members leverage social media tools to promote their ideas and scholarship.
1.Research and write news-oriented content about faculty scholarship and newsworthy institutional initiatives in a variety of formats, including web stories, Q&As, profiles, query letters, facts sheets, and more; assist with editing and placement of opinion pieces.
2.Publicize notable faculty and student research projects, innovative academic/curricular offerings, special events, personality profiles, and significant institutional initiatives and advances.
3.Field media inquiries arrange and facilitate interviews, and post news content on the Law School's website and social media platforms.
4.Follow the reporting/social media postings of journalists covering legal issues and news beats in line with priority areas of academic focus, cultivate relationships with editors, producers, reporters and bloggers, and arrange briefings with faculty experts.
5.Assist with a variety of special projects and assignments.

General Minimum Qualifications: Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant. Bachelor's degree and a minimum of four (4) years of directly related experience in journalism, public relations, publishing, and/or higher education. Background in promoting intellectual concepts and information, and translating complex ideas into compelling copy that can be communicated to an educated general-interest audience, as well as members of the legal community. Law degree a plus.
Candidate must be an outstanding writer, fast and versatile, with relevant experience writing news stories for digital platforms. Individual must have prior experience in promoting complex ideas and issues, and in media relations generally, including both traditional and new media. Must be able to multitask and juggle multiple projects with tiered deadlines, possess excellent judgment and nuanced understanding of controversial issues, and have the maturity needed to interact effectively with members of the Law School's faculty and senior administrators, as well as with members of the press.
