Under the general direction from the Director of Wellbeing and Health Education, the Health Educator provides oversight for the Health Education program and health education support for Cal Poly Health Services and the campus community. The Health Educator provides leadership in identifying goals for and developing Health Education programs for Campus Health & Wellbeing and addresses long and short-term campus health education needs. Incumbents direct, plan, design, and implement, and evaluate health education programs with the goal being to improve health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.
The following examples illustrate typical work activities and are not meant to be all inclusive or restrictive:
Organize and conduct educational programs and activities on various health topics that will contribute to the improvement of student health by bringing about change in understanding, attitudes, and behavior.
Develop and recommend operational policies and plans necessary for the achievement of health education objectives and services consistent with the typical professional standards.
Coordinate the recruitment, training and supervision of Health Education support staff. Provide guidance and resources to prepare Health Education support staff to further their career in Health Education.
Plan health educational and consultative functions that reflect the needs of campus population.
May conduct studies and surveys to determine priority needs and effective methods for producing programs to meet these needs.
May apply for grants to support health education programs.
Develop educational programs designed to stimulate participation in health education programs using a wide range of media, including educational technologies and electronic and web-based programs. Prepare health education mass-media materials and develop or arrange for the development of audio-visual materials for health programs.
Plan and conduct pre-tests to evaluate teaching and information materials such as pamphlets, flyers, and, multimedia.
Instruct students in principles of health by group or individual instruction. May provide health education in such areas as nutrition, mental wellbeing, sexual health, and substance use.
Provide appropriate referrals to medical professionals, counselors and campus officials.
Maintain health education records and resources and prepare a variety of written and verbal reports.
Coordinate the recruitment, training and supervision of student volunteers for the Peer Health Education Program and related health promotion programs.
Keep current with practices and trends in health education, especially those pertaining to a setting in higher education.
Supervise 40-50 student peer health educators: recruit, train review and approve work assignments; maximize productivity; maintain high level of motivation; review and sign payroll sheets.
Participate in campus and community meetings and develop liaisons.
Apprise tasks and delegate when appropriate to clerical support, student assistants, and peer health educators; review and approve work of student assistants and clerical support and provide input to performance evaluations for Health Education support staff.
Coordinate the design of bulletin board displays and flyers, post and maintain health education displays and information stations on-campus.
Coordinate the development of health promotion marketing and outreach messaging for social media.
Provide clinical health education support though hand-outs, health topic displays, and one-on-one student consultation on health information, resources and referrals.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
Bachelor's degree in an approved program in health education or related health field with two years of progressively responsible health education experience.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, CREDENTIALS:
Current First Aid and CPR certification.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
Thorough knowledge of health education theories, research, and program assessment; planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs; and industry standards for the delivery of health education in higher education.
General knowledge of or ability to learn quickly, current and emerging college age student health problems and existing methods of intervention and control.
Working knowledge of the principles of education and social psychology and how they apply to a health education program; and applicable industry standards and practice for health promotions such as those found in the American College Health Association's "Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education".
Working knowledge of social media, marketing and other emerging technology needs for effective health promotion marketing and outreach.
Ability to asses needs and establish or recommend program priorities and goals and develop plans to achieve goals; collect, compile, chart, and analyze data pertinent to health education program planning.
Ability to plan, organize, conduct or oversee a variety of health education program and activities including discussion groups and workshops.
Ability to develop education materials and media such as pamphlets, audio and video materials, and electronic and social media; present ideas and information accurately, effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to use computer and web-based information technology systems as a resource for research and providing health education programs.
Ability to maintain confidentiality consistent with applicable laws and regulations;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, students, campus partners, medical and other health professionals, representative of the news media, and other community groups.
Ability to work well with college students, one-on-one and in groups.
Knowledge of oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of organizational skills.
Ability to supervise student peers and delegate responsibility as necessary.
Ability and skill to proficiently operate a BMI and Mac PCs for word-processing.
Knowledge of a variety of computer software packages and their application.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
An American Public Health Association approved Master's degree in Public Health with emphasis on health education, a Master's degree in Health Science or Public Health Administration or equivalent and/or National (C.H.E.S.) certification are highly preferred. Candidates that possess a Master's Degree and/or C.H.E.S. certification, as stated above, are only required to possess one year of progressively responsible health education experience.
Special Conditions (Staff)
***THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED***
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
