Cal Poly is a nationally ranked, four-year, comprehensive public university located in San Luis Obispo, California. The role of the University Development Division (UD) is to foster strong relationships with internal and external partners to enhance support for Cal Poly. University Development establishes and implements an overall advancement program, including coordinating fundraising, communications, government and community relations, marketing and alumni programs.
Under the general direction of the Director of Donor Relations, this position plays a key role in the success of the University's second comprehensive campaign by developing communications materials directly related to fundraising activities, including proposals and other documents, to be used by the President and others, designed to solicit the largest gifts to the university. This position requires close collaboration with colleagues across campus and the ability to work with a high degree of independence in a fast-paced, dynamic, decentralized fundraising environment.
This is a service-oriented position that requires collaboration with the University Development leadership team, including the Director of Donor Relations, Assistant Vice President for Creative Services, Prospect Management and Research team, Stewardship Coordinator, Director of Annual Giving, development officers, and faculty and academic leaders across campus.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and three years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and public relations, or a related field. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Thorough knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; strong writing and editing skills.
Ability to quickly produce clear and concise documents for internal and external publication; and excellent proofreading skills.
Advanced story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills.
Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver messages.
Ability to interview, research and write compelling cases for support to be delivered to potential donors.
Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of institutional etiquette, general practices, protocols, methods and procedures related to public affairs, media/donor relations, marketing, and/or fund-raising fundamentals. Experience in coordinating meetings and special events.
Experience in developing a plan to enhance communication between individuals and various entities.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and a demonstrated success in interacting effectively with a wide scope of people at all levels; strong initiative, public speaking, listening and consensus-building skills. Ability to serve as a liaison for the Department.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Ability to reason logically; analyze and solve problems; and complete projects with little supervision and meet strict deadlines.
Ability to recommend creative solutions while ensuring compliance with established University scholarship policies and procedures.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments simultaneously with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines by applying working knowledge of the organization, programs and priorities; ability to handle a complex, fast-paced work schedule while paying attention to detail.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, databases, on-line systems, Internet, presentation programs as well as online calendaring and email.
Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats. Ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals.
Working knowledge of applicable laws pertaining to written and electronic materials and news media, including libel/slander, copyright, privacy and other laws pertaining to news media and confidentiality.
Knowledge of Associated Press style, web page-development software, photo and web-video editing, desktop publishing, photography, social media experience to produce brochures, invitations, handouts, advertisements, flyers and other materials.
Ability to provide lead work direction.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, Ellucian Advance Database, PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
Experience in a higher-education setting preferred.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be willing to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
