Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Iowa State University Athletics Department is accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Athletics Communications who will serve as the primary media coordinator for assigned Division I intercollegiate sports (softball and soccer). Serve as the liaison between ISU Athletics and targeted national, regional and local news media, cyclones.com, cyclones.tv, and current social media platforms on a daily basis. Develop and implement a solid strategic communications plan to reach both internal and external audiences. The successful candidate will be highly creative, organized, work closely with national media outlets, and possess the knowledge and skills for independent judgement when dealing with crisis management in an unpredictable environment.
This position will be responsible for spearheading office efforts in graphic design. Implement a plan for producing creative infographics for all sport platforms and oversee office graphic design students. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing quality graphics using Photoshop.
The position is responsible for conceptualizing and writing effective feature stories, including researching facts, conducting interviews, analyzing information, selecting topics and information that is not known or easily available to our audience. Position must determine and use multiple media platforms (blogs, social media, local and national news, ISU website). Responsible for adhering to the rules and regulations of the department, University, Big 12 Conference, and NCAA. Other related administrative duties and projects as assigned.
The successful candidate will have strong creative writing skills and experience producing solid design projects with Photoshop and InDesign, or closely related software, to create original content for online publication. Must have skill utilizing multiple media platforms, solid knowledge of sports writing, rules and statistics. This position requires the ability to work many evenings and weekends, travel out of state for sports coverage, and meet tight deadlines.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Writing and/or public relations experience for intercollegiate or professional athletics communications programs.
Experience covering softball and/or soccer including writing, promoting, and using statistical programs.
Demonstrated experience with Adobe Creative Suites software to produce publications and graphic designs.
Demonstrated experience in creative social media consumption, including the ability to produce timely graphics and videos.
Degree in journalism, mass communication or related field.
Final candidates should be prepared to provide work samples of feature stories and graphics/infographics for a covered sport. JPEGS, attachments, or file-sharing links are common acceptable forms.
