The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) consists of 17 academic departments and programs, and approximately 300 faculty, 70 staff, and 3,000 students in 17 undergraduate majors and 5 graduate programs. The CLA includes disciplines that represent four broad areas of knowledge: the fine and performing arts, communications, the humanities, and the social sciences, as well as interdisciplinary majors and minors. In addition to offering courses for its own majors, CLA offers a significant proportion of courses in general education, courses that support minors, and courses that serve as electives for all majors throughout the university. Further, the CLA plays a significant role in providing activities that enhance the cultural and intellectual environment of the campus, including exhibits and performances offered by our academic departments (e.g., Art & Design, Music, Theatre & Dance) and Cal Poly Arts, cultural programs and lecture series offered by all of our departments, and co-curricular programs, such as KCPR Radio, Mustang News, and Model U.N.
The CLA Public Affairs/Communication Specialist Pool is intended for qualified applicants to be called upon for temporary college communications and related appointments on an as-needed basis. Under the general supervision of the Dean and in collaboration with the Communications Coordinator/Specialist Lead, an individual hired in the position takes on special assignments to promote the reputation of the CLA and its programs to state, national and international audiences. The incumbent will provide information about the college's departments, programs and activities in various media (writing, web and/or graphic design, video, social media) and through publications, websites, and other forms of communication, including contributions to college and department magazines and newsletters (print and on-line), annual reports, press releases, brochures, and scripts.
Depending on college needs, interviews may be conducted at any time while the pool is open. Hourly, pool appointments vary in classification, salary, and length and provide varying levels of support for the CLA and its departments.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
LEVEL: PUBLIC AFFAIRS/COMMUNICATION SPECIALIST I: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and two years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and public relations, or a related field.
LEVEL: PUBLIC AFFAIRS/COMMUNICATION SPECIALIST II: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and three years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and public relations, or a related field.
LEVEL: MEDIA PRODUCTION SPECIALIST I: Bachelor's Degree in graphic design, graphic communication, communication studies, mass communication, journalism, film, theater or related field AND six months multimedia production experience.
LEVEL: MEDIA PRODUCTION SPECIALIST II: Bachelor's Degree in graphic design, graphic communication, communication studies, mass communication, journalism, or related field AND one year multimedia production experience.
LEVEL: GRAPHIC DESIGNER I: College degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field or through technical experience and/or relevant coursework.
LEVEL: GRAPHIC DESIGNER II: Bachelor's degree in journalism, graphic design, communications, or a related field and one year of design experience.
ALLOWABLE SUBSTITUTION FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS/COMMUNICATION SPECIALIST: A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge of or ability to learn college & university objectives & priorities & to interpret & convey college & university objectives to faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, industry representatives & the general public
Ability to learn protocols & institutional etiquette related to public & media relations
Knowledge of & ability to apply emerging communication practices, principles & techniques
Knowledge of standard theories, practices, principles & techniques in the public affairs, media, & marketing areas
Ability to keep abreast of campus events & subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify & capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the college & university & increase positive media coverage
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear & understandable manner, both verbally & in writing
Knowledge of journalistic research techniques & methods; ability to research & identify communication needs & target audiences
Excellent writing & editing skills to quickly produce clear & concise standard documents for internal & external publication; ability to interview, research & write compelling stories for newsletters, magazines, web, & other media
Ability to write, edit & repurpose print & online communications materials to support & reflect needs & objectives of the college & targeted audiences, reflecting brand, voice & tone, & strategic objectives
Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation & modern English usage
Knowledge of applicable laws pertaining to written & electronic materials, confidentiality & news media, including libel/slander, copyright, & privacy laws
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy & professionalism
Excellent computer skills & proficiency with a variety of computer applications including a working knowledge or ability to quickly learn new software & to use a variety of software programs such as word processing, desktop publishing, web content management systems, etc Strong aptitude for communications technology, with demonstrable skills
Strong interpersonal skills, to develop & maintain relationships; ability to work effectively & creatively with diverse individuals & groups, both on & off campus
Demonstrated ability to establish a respectful, collaborative, & productive work environment
Ability to train & provide lead work direction for student assistants

Must be able to sit in front of a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site professional development.
Must be able to adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called on periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to drive to pick up and deliver documents.
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
