University Communications Manager
Nestled in the hills overlooking the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, Holy Names University is the oldest Catholic University in the East Bay and one of the most diverse universities in the United States. A coeducational, liberal arts institution of about 1,300 students, HNU offers the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education, Master of Music, and Master of Science in Nursing. POSITION AND DUTIES
The University Communications Manager (UCM) will provide support in the development and implementation of short- and long-term communications strategies and campaigns to increase the visibility of the University. Original conceptualizing and writing, editing, and proofing of material is an essential part of this position.
Overall emphasis by the UCM will be on analyzing, creating, maintaining, and updating informational materials that achieve HNU's marketing and communication goals. The UCM manages comprehensive, innovative marketing and communications materials, including written, visual, and electronic communications. The UCM works closely with Marketing and University colleagues to develop concepts, designs, messages, images, content for online, print, and social media, and advertising materials. The UCM also integrates print publications, online, and social media efforts and implements marketing and communications strategies. The UCM deploys appropriate brand messaging in all of these media. Under the supervision of the Director of Marketing & Public Relations, the UCM advises and consults with internal clients regarding all aspects of communications, including the development of strong marketing communications strategies that effectively deliver the University's desired message.
The UCM will:
Identify, write, research (where needed), edit, and proof University publications (such as the University magazine, annual report, and newsletters), external and internal communications, and University collateral.
Create news releases, op-ed pieces, and articles that spotlight administrative staff, faculty, and students for trade publications, print and online.
Write donor stories and (in collaboration with the University Web Manager) update web content as needed.
Identify specific communications needs and develop the content and process for organizational improvements.
Select metrics to measure performance and outcomes of all communications efforts, including social media. Evaluate effectiveness of strategies and develop and maintain a system for tracking impact.
Oversee and provide updates for the University's Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media accounts (in collaboration with other University staff). Create and execute social media campaigns in collaboration with Enrollment Management and University Advancement. Monitor other University-affiliated accounts (e.g. HNU MBA, HNU Music Department, HNU Alumni Association) to ensure brand consistency across all HNU social media. Maintain the University's historical blog.
Provide support with campus photo events, general photography, and other multimedia formats.
Maintain HNU Communication policies, style guides and standards in all marketing materials.
Serve on crisis communications team.
Coordinate special projects as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in marketing, public relations, communications or a related field required. Must know Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and basic HTML (desired)
This position requires a highly creative, versatile writer who is organized and able to multi-task.
Must be able to communicate with simple, direct writing that inspires audiences to take action.
Knowledge of the fundamentals of effective writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation and superior skills to write and edit clear, lively, engaging, compelling and effective copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and the broader public.
Ability to analyze and understand the market and environment in which the marketing communications programs are being deployed.
Strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education (desired).
Experience with writing and editing for institutional publications (desired).
This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Director of Marketing and Public Relations.
