The Vice President, Field Government and Public Affairs is responsible for building and maintaining a positive image and reputation for Cox with key constituents by expertly managing communication strategies and tactics in areas that include government and public affairs. Provide advice, counsel, and strategic input to the Virginia Region’s Senior Team on matters related to local, state and federal governmental, political and public policy issues in coordination with the Cox Communications Center Government Affairs and Cox Enterprises Public Policy offices.
Lead staff of government and public affairs professionals in the Virginia Region
Serve as principal spokesperson for Cox to local media, community and government officials
Direct activities that promote company visibility, building a strong company image, and increase public awareness and consumer propensity to do business with Cox
Develop and execute state legislative game plans and other public policy strategies in coordination with the Cox Communications Center Government Affairs and Cox Enterprises Public Policy offices
Manage relationships with federal, state and local elected officials and other public opinion leaders to maintain the company's positive image among this important constituency, while ensuring a favorable political climate for Cox
Engage the Region Manager and Market Vice Presidents to effectively to support public policy efforts
Build employee engagement through programs that increase employee support in Cox’s Political Action Committee, Cox Charities and other community initiatives
Provide strategic direction to the development and execution of community relations programs aligned closely with corporate strategies and programs including but not limited to youth, technology, education, conservation, diversity and inclusion
Oversee the development and execution of strategies and plans to promote effective communications among all employees. Partner and collaborate with Cox Communications Internal Communications as needed to ensure alignment
Collaborate closely with marketing, Cox Business, Cox Media and other departments to ensure alignment of strategies and initiatives for maximum benefit and ROI
High level budget responsibility
Long-term strategic planning responsibility
Bachelor's degree in government affairs, journalism, public relations, or a related field strongly desired
Masters’ Degree preferred
10+ years’ experience in government affairs and/or public affairs, including extensive strategic communications planning experience
Minimum of five years’ experience in a management role with significant responsibility for most, preferably all, of the areas outlined above
Strong people manager who can lead, inspire, and direct the activities of a team of government and public affairs professionals
Ensures high levels of performance by clearly defining team member goals and responsibilities; provides on-going development, support and coaching
Previous experience in the role of company spokesperson is required
Exceptional oral and written communication skills tailored for various purposes, such as news releases, executive speeches and presentations, video scripts, articles and more
Applied knowledge in working with online communications and social media
Knowledge of effective branding strategies and plans for implementation
Self-directed, action oriented, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards
Dynamic leader with a record of achieving results individually and collaboratively with others
Strategic visionary with strong financial skills, analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus
