Summary of Duties:
Editorial Art Director
University Marketing, the Ohio State University Office of Advancement
The Editorial Art Director leads visioning, coordination and production through all facets of the creative process for the Ohio State Alumni Magazine – an 85-page publication that is distributed multiple times throughout the year. Directing the editorial design team, he/she will foster alignment across marketing disciplines and with Alumni Association leadership. In addition, this position will select, direct and manage external creative partner relationships including but not limited to photographers, illustrators, freelance designers and printers.
This exciting opportunity will primarily entail direction that includes choosing stories and photography, managing creative partners, and storyboarding. However, the selected candidate also needs to be able act in a hands-on capacity as this individual will be responsible for high-profile designs that include covers, feature stories, etc. The Editorial Art Director will be the primary liaison for production of the magazine and will also strive to engage with the Buckeye community in an attempt to encourage creative participation.

Short-term: Become familiar with OSU brand guidelines
Establish style guidelines
Understand what makes University Marketing at Ohio State special while also understanding what differentiates our magazine from our competitors
Solidify the appropriate outside resources
Establish partnerships with the production/print stakeholders
Increase the engagement of young alumni
Broaden audience appeal
Increase positive readership feedback
Improve advertising strategy to tighten standards and better integrate with content
The ideal candidate will have proven layout experience, be equally comfortable directing and doing, and be both inspired and inspiring to others. He/she will thoroughly understand the nuances of printing, be comfortable managing others and partnering with both internal and external teams, and be an effective communicator of vision.

Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Graphic Arts, Visual Communications, Fine Arts, or comparable; 8+ years of practice in the field of design; 4+ years of focused publication and/or editorial design experience (i.e. magazine/newspaper layout); 1+ years of creative leadership experience (project-based and direct management).
Experience art-directing other editorial designers, photographers and illustrators (freelance or full-time employees); innovative and progressive creative sensibilities; proficient across Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat); strong understanding of and skills with typography, illustration, layout design and photography practices; professional experience directing on-location photo and video shoots; advanced digital photo retouching experience; experience leveraging analytics to help guide and inform creative strategies; experience with proofing methods and pre-press operations; demonstrated knowledge and interest in the Ohio State brand, academics, news and current events.
Target Salary: $73,000.00 - $83,000.00 Annually
