The Department of Electrical Engineering (UW EE) at the University of Washington is a nationally ranked education and research program. Located on the main Seattle campus of the University of Washington, UW Electrical Engineering currently supports greater than 750 undergraduate and graduate students and over 50 active research faculty. UW EE is a dynamic organization that provides comprehensive administrative and advising services in support of our teaching, research and service missions.
UW EE has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 4.
This position will perform advanced technical and organizational work using knowledge and experience that will support the vision and goals of the Institute for Nano-engineered Systems (NanoES) and the overarching National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI) network. The position will manage research projects and will assist with the writing of grant proposals under the guidance of Director Karl Bhringer and/or other NanoES and NNCI affiliated faculty. This position will need to understand the technical aspects of preparing proposals and be familiar with the technical focus areas of NanoES and NNCI, such as integrated photonics, bio-nano interfaces, advanced energy materials and devices, and scalable micro and nano fabrication techniques. The position will develop and implement communication strategies that increase external awareness of the mission of NanoES and NNCI, and represent the Institute and the Network within UW and at external events.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Perform research studies within the themes of NanoES and NNCI, including but not limited to the technical focus areas listed above.
Monitor the work of junior research personnel to ensure that correct procedures are followed. Provide direction to assure that technical tasks and projects are completed in a timely manner.
Coordinate and collaborate with team members within and outside the university on ongoing projects, taking the lead as appropriate on primary projects and within area of expertise.
Participate in the preparation of papers, presentations, and other scholarly reports. Present findings at scientific conferences, technical meetings, and presentations for research sponsors.
Represent and help promote NanoES and NNCI to showcase its research in ways that will attract new students, collaborators, and supporters.
Serve as a contact person for NanoES and NNCI researchers, fellows and students on Institute resources, events, seminar talks and conferences.
Coordinate and manage NanoES and NNCI research projects and events, facilitate committee meetings, committee work, and coordinate communications.
Regularly communicate with internal and external stakeholders including University of Washington faculty, local, regional and federal agency organizations, etc. in order to coordinate efforts and maximize impact.
Assist with the preparation and writing of grant proposals and project reports; develop and assess progress metrics.
Help expand research, education and technology transfer plans. Assist in planning and directing the dissemination of information regarding the Institute's research, outreach, and technology transfer activities, in order to publicize successes of the Institute through regular reporting, newsletters, emails, and website.
Serve as the primary contact for NanoES and NNCI publications and coordinate with partners, public information and news organizations to ensure information concerning NanoES is current and accurately reflecting the institute goals.
Supervise the maintenance of the Institute's website and databases.
Perform other duties as assigned.
| Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, bioengineering, physics, chemistry or related field. |
Minimum two years of experience in nanotechnology research and project management.
Experience writing and preparing scientific papers, technical reports, and grant proposals.
Outstanding technical and non-technical writing ability and exceptional use of language and editing, spelling and grammar skills.
Experience writing for web, social media or other digital media.
Ability to work independently, problem solve, take initiative, set priorities and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively. Takes responsibility and initiative to set and meet the goals, objectives and obligations while representing the mission, visions and values of the organizations.
Demonstrated creativity, organizational ability, and strong attention to detail; ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations, exercise good judgment based on information and analysis in a fast paced, dynamic, deadline-driven environment in an organized and professional manner.
Proven ability to be a team player and team builder; lead and share leadership and to work for the greater good of the organization.
Strong interpersonal skills; professional manner with the ability to express oneself clearly and empathetically in interactions with others in all forms of communications, verbal and written, one-on-one and group, etc., ability to communicate in a direct and professional manner that resolves differences.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders and actively contributes as a member of working teams to achieve results.
Proficient in information technologies to support the above duties, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs.
May require some work outside normal working hours to meet specific deadlines.
May require travel to review meetings, site visits, conferences, and panels.
