The Senior Public Relations Manager is responsible for creating and implementing proactive communications plans and activities and handling reactive media inquiries to support the university’s institutional and reputational goals, faculty research and expertise, graduate programs, and select initiatives and events, specifically for the School of Communication and the Kogod School of Business.
This position collaborates closely with deans, department heads, faculty, school communication colleagues and other university staff, regularly and consistently. It also supervises and assigns project work to one or more interns to support media relations and office priorities. In addition, the Senior Public Relations Manager collaborates with PR, digital, photography, marketing and editorial colleagues on strategy, planning, work flow, information sharing.
This position serves in an on-call capacity on weekends, holidays and after hours on a rotating basis and as needed. Also serves as a university spokesperson during a crisis, as needed.

Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, public relations, or related field.
General knowledge of and experience in public policy, government, political science, international relations and/or international development.
10+ years of media relations or public relations experience
A proactive and client relations focus and attitude. Proven success working in cross functional environments
Strong and polished written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
Mastery of common office computer software programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and media monitoring software. Ability to learn new software programs
Solid working knowledge of public relations best practices, strategies, systems and techniques for obtaining positive news coverage, both proactive and reactive, and the ability to develop strong relationships with target media outlets
Demonstrated experience in meeting deadlines under pressure, being both strategic and hands-on, and working well with peers and faculty or senior leaders
Experience in formulating and pitching story ideas and expert commentary, and writing for the media, university and/or web audiences
Tangible success in developing and executing comprehensive communications plans and campaigns
Ability to mine faculty work and school initiatives for newsworthy story ideas
Must think creatively, work with accuracy, and demonstrate judgment and professionalism with a variety of internal and external stakeholders in a knowledgeable, persuasive, and timely manner
Must be able to handle conflict with tact
Ability to work flexible hours and occasional overtime
This position requires initiative, persuasion, organization, foresight, self-direction, multi-tasking, leadership, collaboration, minimal day-to-day supervision, and translating of scholarly research into consumable news
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Newsroom or agency experience
Higher education, government or non-profit experience
Experience with web publishing and social media desired
