4 Year Degree
The ACS is looking to hire a Audience Engagement Editor to join the C&EN group.
C&EN (Chemical & Engineering News) produces authoritative, award-winning journalism about the world of chemistry, including coverage of recent advances in research, education, industry, funding, and regulatory policy. It is published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society dedicated to a single discipline, and is widely considered one of the major benefits of membership. C&EN’s weekly print magazine reaches more than 156,000 members of ACS, and its daily website receives more than 7 million page views per year.
Create, produce, and manage C&EN’s presence on social media and other platforms, serving as the voice of C&EN on a daily basis and encouraging readers to engage with our journalism.
Oversee efforts to drive usage of and engagement with all C&EN products in real time, using search, social, and other methods but in all cases guided by engagement and traffic metrics.
Work with the newsroom to identify stories that will resonate with C&EN’s audiences on social channels. Craft and package content tailored to social platforms that C&EN’s current and future audiences use, including Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, Instagram, Snapchat, and LinkedIn.
Collaborate with colleagues across the American Chemical Society to deliver that content via as many society platforms as appropriate.
Champion social media as an engagement tool in the newsroom by coaching and advising reporters on how to engage readers via their personal handles and how to harness new tools made available by social platforms.
In collaboration with marketing, establish a social media strategy across all C&EN channels. Jointly define outcomes, key performance indicators, and measures of success. Assist in quarterly audits of C&EN’s social channels as well as competitors’ social activity.
Partner with the newsroom and C&EN marketing to maintain our email newsletter products and to create new vibrant, engaging ones supported by advertising and/or sponsorship models.
Lead conversation about our journalism among chemists, wherever that conversation is taking place (website comments, social, etc.) and look for ways to surface the most interesting threads of conversation to our readers.
Partner with C&EN’s marketing teams to measure and analyze reader engagement with our social channels, email newsletters, and related products to refine and shape newsroom strategies.
Create accompanying art for social media posts where appropriate, utilizing assets from C&EN’s creative team, Canva, and other resources.
Look for additional ways to expose new audiences from around the world to C&EN’s journalism.
Track record of writing clean, creative, engaging copy that resonates with a sophisticated scientific audience.
Ability to analyze data, comments, and other anecdotal engagement metrics to gain a sense for what types of stories C&EN’s audiences will want to share, how best to frame them, and which platforms to share them on.
Track record of building engaged digital and/or social communities and website traffic from them.
Knowledge of the latest social media platforms updates and capabilities and how to use them to engage with C&EN’s audiences.
Strong editorial judgment, attention to detail, storytelling, and oral communication skills.
Strong understanding of social media, marketing automation, and analytics platforms.
The ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, high-stakes environment with limited supervision.
Knowledge of social media advertising best practices.
A college degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related scientific field is required; education in journalism is desirable.
5+ years’ experience in journalism, social media management, marketing, or communications is required.
Experience with HTML/coding and/or marketing automation platforms is a plus.
Along with a resume, please submit 1-2 samples of work: For example, send us a link to an online presence—a blog, a Twitter stream, etc—that you’re proud of creating. Or show us how you used social media storytelling to engage with your community. Finally, tell us in a cover letter what you can bring to C&EN. Send all materials to Amanda Yarnell (email@example.com) after submitting resume below.
The American Chemical Society is a congressionally chartered independent membership organization which represents professionals at all degree levels and in all fields of the chemical sciences.
With nearly 157,000 members, ACS is the world’s largest scientific society and one of the world’s leading sources of authoritative scientific information. A nonprofit organization, ACS is at the forefron...t of the evolving chemical enterprise and the premier professional home for chemists, chemical engineers and related professions around the globe.
ACS is dynamic and visionary, committed to “Improving people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry.”
This vision ? developed and adopted by the ACS Board of Directors after broad consultation with the membership ? fully complements the ACS Mission statement, which is “to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people.” Together, these two statements represent our ultimate reason for being and provide a strategic framework for our efforts.
ACS publishes numerous scientific journals and databases, convenes major research conferences and provides educational, science policy and career programs in chemistry. We also give more than $22 million every year in grants for research in petroleum and related fields. We also play a leadership role in educating and communicating with public policy makers and the general public about the importance of chemistry in our lives.
