The Editor/Writer reports to the Director of Communications for the University of Minnesota Medical School. This position will advise on content, determine concept and direction of articles and copy, write and edit for publication in all media channels, prioritize and align content production with the Medical School’s strategic priorities
Specific responsibilities include copy writing, editing content for message and grammar; writing various original content, conducting interviews for content or concept of content, determining concept and direction of articles, publication and promotion of content.
Duties and Responsibilities include but are not necessarily limited to:
Content Development and Management (40%):
Translate Medical School’s strategic goals and communications objectives into editorial content working in partnership with the Director of Communications.
Coordinate the gathering of interviews, visual and audio content, for the college website and social media.
Facilitate editorial meetings and contribute stories for publication and distribution.
Manage the editorial calendar for the Medical School’s Communications department.
Assist with the planning and content development of significant new editorial projects including managing and coordination with external partners such as local news media.
Respond to media inquiries and projects, provide production support as needed.
Work to uncover content and promote key initiatives of the departments.
Find unique and compelling stories that highlight the mission vision of the College
Develop written content such as articles, invitations, speech writing, advertisements, email newsletters, internal and external memos, publications, marketing copy, press releases, etc.
Manage special writing assignments.
Gather stories, respond to submitted story content ideas, curate, write and publish website content.
Ensure that all published materials conform to professional editorial standards.
Write a wide variety of copy from view books to website content to marketing and advertising copy
Special Projects (15%):
Provide support at the community and sponsored events for set up, staffing, messaging as needed.
Work collaboratively across the college on social media, website, and alumni relations to deliver consistent messaging to our internal and external stakeholders

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.
BA/BS in communications, journalism, marketing, art, or related field plus 2 years experience or a combination or education and experience to total 6 years.
Demonstrated ability to execute and complete writing assignments and providing editorial direction.
Experience working in a large, complex institution, preferably higher education.
Experience writing persuasive copy that makes a case aimed at motivating a specific response from the targeted audience.
Strong journalistic abilities, demonstrated through research and writing that explore unique angles and editorial approaches to make stories stand out, and strong interviewing skills
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain relationships at all organizational levels and to work collaboratively
Experience in writing about health and medicine topics.
A strong journalistic sense, demonstrated through experience writing and editing magazines or newspapers targeted to a broad public
Experience writing for a variety of media, including print, Web and presentations, extending content from one to the other
Ability to understand strategic priorities of an organization and to make effective editorial decisions based on those priorities
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and function independently
Excellent writing and editing skills, including identification of sources and story angles
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships within the organization and with campus partners
