SUPERVISOR: Assistant to President for Campus Communications

HOURLY PAY RATE: $18 per hour
General Statement of Duties:
The part-time communications assistant's primary duty is to write stories and take photographs for the Worcester State University news site, news.worcester.edu, as assigned by his/her supervisor. The assistant will also handle other writing, research, and editing responsibilities, as assigned.
All responsibilities are considered essential.
Writing news stories for the Worcester State University website, and taking/providing photographs and video or other art for those stories, with quick turnaround;
Outreach to faculty and administrators to uncover newsworthy stories from the campus community and conducting interviews for stories;
Crafting press releases to send out to media contacts;
Responding to media requests for information, as assigned;
Writing letters, messages, and, potentially, op-eds and speeches, for senior administrators, as assigned;
Preparing social media posts for Assistant to the President and the President;
Conducting print, broadcast, online, and social media research;
Developing and updating media and social media lists;
Editing materials written by other President's Office staff and PR interns;
Administrative duties, which, on occasion, may include providing back-up reception and other assistance for the President's Office staff;
Interface with the Communications, Marketing, Advancement and Athletics communicators team;
Carry out other duties as assigned by the Assistant to the President for Campus Communications, including serving on ad hoc and standing committees.
Performs other duties as assigned.
A bachelor's degree in journalism, English or communications, or a related field, with writing and editing emphasis.
Professional experience in the field.
Excellent writing skills, with a proven ability to write "news" style articles on very tight deadlines.
Strong interviewing, organizational, and computer skills.
Understanding and commitment to the mission and goals of Worcester State University.

Strong interviewing, organizational, and computer skills. Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills required.
3+ years of experience in a related field.
Experience taking PR quality digital photography and with Adobe Photoshop.
Knowledge of technical tools used in public relations, including WordPress, Microsoft Office, Excel, Gmail, basic HTML, and an ability to learn new tools.
Experience with SEO for web writing.
Impeccable editing skills and experience adhering to a Style Guide.
Strong skills/experience in social media, particularly Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Experience working with web CMS systems.
Experience working with email marketing tools such as Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, Vertical Response.
