Reporting to the Associate Dean for Office of Development, Alumni and External Relations, the Senior Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for the management and execution of the external and internal communications for the Johns Hopkins University School of Education (SOE). This includes, but is not limited to, developing comprehensive and strategic communications, marketing, brand management and media placement with the Associate Dean and School’s administrative leadership team to prominently position SOE as a top Research I Institution, and purveyor of exceptional graduate leadership and training in education, counseling and public safety leadership.
This position will provide vision, leadership, policy formulation and development for and management of an integrated communications plan to promote and advance the initiatives of the School of Education, and the recruitment of qualified candidates to its programs. The primary function of this position is to promote the School of Education by cultivating recognition of its accomplishments, bring visibility to its opportunities and successes, and provide context and relevance of its academic programs and research across all constituents including potential candidates, the Johns Hopkins’ university community, education peer institutions nationally, and education advocates globally.
While managing a team of three that includes creative director, web specialist and project manager, this position will design and execute an annual strategic plan that leverages the content of the School’s online and digital presence and external messaging. This is includes oversight of and contribution to: websites (education.jhu.edu); electronic publications (monthly e-newsletter); social media and professional networking (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram); internally developed directory/networking programs (Inside Education); and Email marketing and messaging (Lyris), and media relations for the School of Education.
Established in 2007, the Johns Hopkins University School of Education is a national leader in education reform through research and teaching. Grounded in the Johns Hopkins’ tradition of research and innovation, the SOE is consistently ranked in the among the nation’s top graduate schools of education by U.S. News & World Report and is among the top recipients of funded research in the United States. The school addresses some of the most challenging problems facing education today in areas ranging from early childhood education to adult learning through its doctoral and graduate programs; research and development activities; external partnerships with school systems and educational entrepreneurs; and collaborative connections to the broader Johns Hopkins research community. The SOE’s constituency includes PhD, EdD, Masters, Bachelors, and certificate program candidates; post-doctoral fellows; faculty; staff; current students; and approximately 21,000 alumni.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Devises and implements annual communications and marketing plan and budget to meet and exceed goals related to tracking return on department investments via participation, readership, open rates and click-throughs for the School of Education.
Work creatively and collaboratively with SOE academic programs to assist in their outreach efforts as part of a comprehensive communications, marketing and recruitment strategy; disseminating research as well as complex education and interdisciplinary topics.
Promote SOE with constituencies throughout the university by developing methods and materials to ensure that external and internal audiences are made aware of the school activities, including philanthropic or grant funding received by school centers, divisions and individual faculty.
Oversee content of all printed and electronic communications shared with external and internal audiences, managing publications, newsletters, brochure texts, articles, and seasonal and special communications, including development and strategic oversight of website content and navigation updates.
Work closely with staff, editors, and writers to appropriately publicize fundraising priorities, alumni and student activities and events.
Contract and manage outside writers as needed.
Conduct and/or coordinate interviews with faculty, staff and students and others featured in content.
Draft materials such as editorials for dean, program descriptions, school-wide priorities, web copy, create strategies for integrating print, web, and social media.
Represent SOE on University committees as necessary, including JHU Communications’ , Government Affairs and Development Communications, Serving as the liaison to promote the School through press releases, articles, media, calendar listings, and story ideas for university publications, such as biannuanl Hopkins Magazine and weekly HUB.
Provides counsel and guidance for SOE Centers and Institute Communications staff for all aspects of web hosting, CMS implementation, and Lyris List Manager Software issues.
Gather and research Web analytics to develop and analyze reports regarding effectiveness of web sites and web-based/electronic-based communications; identify needs and implement changes to increase effectiveness to meet and exceed goals.
Assist with the planning and implementation, including staffing of, school or institutional projects, programs, and events, as needed or requested.
Perform other duties as required.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Five years of related experience required.
Preferred qualifications: Master’s preferred. Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

First-hand experience with web formatting languages/environments including HTML, CSS;
Extensive experience and working knowledge of web page design, content management tools, especially WordPress.
Familiar with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn) and social media reporting (analyzing organic and paid performance).
Knowledge of interactive web features including survey, video, audio, and animation components.
Proficiency with web- and paper-oriented design tools such as Adobe products (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop Acrobat), and Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and understanding of cloud-based applications such as Basecamp, Mailchimp and Eventbright.
Must have an openness to learn new software and database programs;
Strong interpersonal skills, with a high degree of professionalism and the ability to exercise good judgment, diplomacy, and discretion with diverse populations and situations
Any specific physical requirements for the job:
Must be willing and able to travel locally and overnight occasionally.
Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. for short distances.
Must be able to maneuver public transportation and/or transport oneself to various off-site locations.
Must be able to sit or stand for one to three hours.
