Under administrative supervision from the Editorial Manager and in collaboration with the members of the Marketing and Communications Department, the Editor/Writer assists with the planning, researching, writing and editing of publications designed to enhance WVSOM’s brand, regional and national recognition using print, electronic, web, social media and mobile technologies for internal and external communications. The editor/writer will think strategically developing communications regarding the school’s hallmarks and leadership role in medical education.
Specific Job Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as an editor/writer for the WVSOM Magazine by participating in the magazine editorial plan and execution;
Assists with an ongoing media relations plan, developing new ideas and initiatives as potential stories become available. Work closely with the Editorial Manager on the plan development.
Assists with WVSOM’s marketing content repurposing and distributing content for various platforms such as social media, web content, and newscenter/magazine stories.
Supports the Editorial Manager on the WVSOM social media marketing plan by creating reports regarding trends and best practices, the development of the strategic marketing plans; tracks and reports user analytics/statistics; and monitors a variety of social media platforms for user comments and opinions.
Gather information, conduct interviews, write and edit materials for WVSOM such as feature articles, press releases, advertisements, video scripts, web content, e-communications, brochures, and recruitment publications as assigned;
Reviews projects, trains, and familiarizes campus department and community members on policies regarding organizational messaging and suggests areas for improvement.
Along with Marketing and Communications team, plan short- and long-term content needs and production schedules for core priority needs and executes successfully in a timely fashion;
Identify events and happenings of interest on campus and for outreach/research projects and then propose topics about which to write or explore;
Produce quality, consistent work, and demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines amidst multiple projects and needs;
Collaborate with staff to develop photo and graphics to accompany stories for print and the web;
Review, rewrite and edit the work of others; provide feedback to improve the quality of work, suggests revisions and rewrites when necessary;
Write and edit news/feature stories for print publications;
Works closely with web communications and video services to coordinate, write, and edit content for web and social media channels;
Writes, coordinates and edits content and publish the newsletter.
Develop and present accurate, creative content that supports the priorities of WVSOM;
Cultivate communications with media sources; set up television news and print interviews between reporters and administrators;
Research and provide draft media talking points and speech copy for leadership, as necessary;
Shoot photo and iPhone video assignments as necessary;
Write, edit and collaborate on other related publications as assigned.
Act as communications representative at conferences, fairs, workshops and other events informing people about the school;
Set up and dismantle WVSOM booth and displays for conferences, fairs, and workshops;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
This is a full-time, non-classified position; it is exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime; salary is commensurate with education and experience, plus a full state benefits package.
Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and may require evening and weekend scheduling as needed. The weekly schedule for this position will be established between the supervisor and the employee and approved given the needs of the department and the institution.
This position has been designated as Essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM.

Qualifications: This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, English, Mass Communications, or related field, with an emphasis in writing and editing. Five to eight (5-8) years of recent and relevant professional experience in writing and editing with magazines, daily newspapers, and/or electronic media is also required. Photography, video production, social media/communications, speech writing experience and/or public relations experience is desired, but not required. Other combinations of education and recent/relevant experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Skilled at proposing stories, gathering information, fact checking, selecting and organizing the material he or she has gathered; using the written word to express ideas and convey information.
Knowledge and experience in proofreading/copy editing per AP Style is strongly preferred. Ensuring information is accurate, complete, and compliant with applicable styles and editorial specifications to include in-depth reviews for grammar, punctuation, style and form.
Strong editorial skills for identification of grammatical, typographical, or compositional errors in hard copy or electronic files. Ability to guide others on the content of their writing.
Strong interpersonal skills and work ethic to build trusted, collaborative relationships with internal clients and with vendors: should have good listening skills, project management skills, and the ability to follow projects to completion.
Knowledge of proofreading/copy editing marks.
Requires a high degree of proficiency and knowledge with MS Office Suite: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access as well as other media and desktop publishing programs.
Candidate must possess strong oral and written skills in English
Candidate must possess the ability to work in a high-energy, rapid paced environment requiring the provision of high-quality publications and other products and services on short notice.
Coordinate/follow the direction of the Editorial Manager to assure format and content compliance, reconciling them with internal and external customer standards and desires.
Proven ability to manage scheduling of document processing, editing, production and graphics support.
