Knight Professor of Practice in TV News Innovation
The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, a national leader in journalism education, seeks to hire a Knight Professor of Practice in TV News Innovation to support a new initiative designed to advance digital and broadcast innovation in local television news.
With major grant support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Cronkite School will serve as a testbed for experimentation and innovation TV news through Cronkite News, the faculty led, student-produced news division of Arizona PBS. The full-time faculty member will work with Cronkite News students and faculty, and commercial television stations from across the country, to test and measure TV news experiments that promote informed and engaged communities. Additionally, the professor of practice will participate in the implementation of a pilot change management strategy program designed specifically for local TV news leaders.
Working in close consort with Cronkite News and school leadership, the Knight Professor of Practice in TV News Innovation’s duties and responsibilities will include:
The Cronkite School, located on ASU’s Downtown Phoenix Campus, in the nation’s 11th largest media market, is a global leader in professional and innovative digital news media education. The school champions a “teaching hospital” model of journalism education in which students create professional content under the guidance of top professionals in Cronkite News at Arizona PBS, a daily news operation that serves as an immersive and innovative learning laboratory for students and provides Arizonans with daily news coverage of critical issues on broadcast and digital platforms. The Cronkite School emphasizes curricula and programs that experiment with new forms of storytelling, audience engagement, digital interactivity, data visualization, audience analytics and revenue models. This is an annual appointment and holds the faculty rank of Professor of Practice. Application deadline: April 30, 2018, or if not filled, every two weeks thereafter until the search is closed.
Application procedure: Materials must include 1) a current resume; 2) a letter outlining employment history, educational philosophy, scholarly research or creative interests and a description of how the applicant’s experiences will benefit the Cronkite School; and 3) names, positions and telephone numbers of three academic or professional references.
Qualifications Required: Senior-level leadership experience in a TV news organization; record of accomplishments and thought leadership related to the future of news; bachelor’s degree.
