KCUR 89.3 is seeking a creative journalist to set the conversational agenda for the Kansas City metro area in a unique daily talk/magazine show. This full-time producer will have their finger on the pulse of local and national culture and news, develop timely and engaging show ideas and find compelling voices in our communities beyond prominent newsmakers and experts.
The Show and Station
Central Standard is a weekday morning show covering local arts and ideas. The show, hosted by Gina Kaufmann, is built around live conversations, occasionally including callers, and often enhanced by produced elements and feature reporting. Conversations on Central Standard take an unexpected angle on the news of the day, and tap into fresh new themes related to life in the Kansas City region. KCUR is a dynamic and rapidly-expanding news organization with a committed following in a city that's family-friendly, fun, tech-savvy and culturally rich.
Basic Function and Responsibility
The producer will work closely and collaboratively with the host and production team to formulate show ideas and concepts, research shows, screen and book guests, and write promos. The producer will be responsible for the live production of the show. This person must have the ability to remain calm during the demands of live radio production, and to work on diverse projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. The successful candidate will have an ability to take direction and work collaboratively with various personalities, and an enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment.
Produce a daily radio talk show with host and production team, including directing, screening calls, and managing social media during the show.
Research and pitch show topics during weekly editorial meetings.
Coordinate the dates of segments and shows.
Identify, contact, assess the suitability of, and book guests.
Provide host with background research, potential interview questions and feedback on scripts.
Collaborate on projects with other KCUR talk shows and the news department.
Handle audience and guest communications for the show.
Work with host to create audio and text promos and audio billboards for the show as well as on social media.
Contribute show-related content to KCUR's website and social media platforms, including audio, text, extended interviews, photos, etc.
Coordinate special remote broadcast events.
Participate in all assigned fund-raising and outreach activities, on air and off.
May oversee the work of interns.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field required; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary .
Two years of work experience in a radio, news, or public media organization.
Two years of work experience producing a live talk show in a radio or public media organization.
Good news judgment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule.
Knowledge of the Kansas City region, or a proven ability to develop a strong network and command of a new city, including contacts in a variety of fields, especially the arts.
Experience operating a variety of broadcast equipment including audio boards, digital editing systems (e.g. Adobe Audition), field recording units, and other production equipment.
Experience producing content for the web and social platforms.
Ability to record in the field and write broadcast copy incorporating tape.
Experience with live event production.
A nuanced understanding of and commitment to incorporating diverse ethnic, cultural and political perspectives on the show.
Salary is commensurate with experience
