<p>The Greater Minnesota Media Relations Consultant works for the University News Service in the Office of University Relations. The News Service is the primary public relations office for the University of Minnesota and the initial point of access for local, national and international media. The consultant is responsible for building relationships with and providing strategic counsel on media outside of the Twin Cities metro area, national media and other targeted media. This role also provides counsel on public relations issues, and identifies and places news stories as part of comprehensive public relations strategies for a range of University clients. Specifically, the Greater Minnesota Media Relations Consultant will:<br /><br />• Focus 50 percent on:<br />o Working with the Public Relations Director and other News Service colleagues to develop and implement a comprehensive media strategy for Greater Minnesota and other targeted media to enhance the University’s reputation and thought leadership beyond the Twin Cities;<br />o Proactively building relationships with media throughout Minnesota (including face-to-face) to, over time, increase the presence of University of Minnesota faculty, students, and successes in Greater Minnesota and targeted media;<br />o Following regional issues and coverage, particularly those with potential impact on Higher Ed and Research, in order to leverage University thought leaders and research in stories and trends as they occur, and enhance the quantity and quality of the University’s representation;<br />o Working with University Relations and college/unit communicators, as well as communicators at UMN Crookston, UMN Duluth, UMN Morris and UMN Rochester, to identify and develop stories for a statewide and diverse audience, and promote those stories in media throughout Minnesota;<br />o Amplifying successful media placements through social media and other internal/external communications vehicles in collaboration with University Relations and University communicators, Government Relations, and with other stakeholder groups.</p><p><br />• Focus 30-35 percent on:<br />o Working with the National Media Relations Consultant to enhance the University’s reputation and thought leadership in key national markets and/or outlets with a national readership;<br />o Proactively building relationships with media in key national and regional locations outside of Minnesota that broadly cover the health sciences to increase visibility for the University’s health sciences schools and colleges.</p><p><br />• Remaining focus of 15-20 percent:<br />o Working with the University Relations team to be responsive to statewide media requests and enhance the effectiveness of University Relations’ work;<br />o Providing media relations support for all parts of the University, including media training, advice on presentation to external audiences, effective strategies, consultative services and planning.<br /> </p><p>Relationships: <br />1. Reports to the Director of Public Relations<br />2. The News Service is a part of University Relations, the central public relations and marketing department of the University of Minnesota<br />3. Develop and maintain strong, positive working relationships with University staff, senior leaders and administrators, college communicators, and members of the media</p>
<p>Required qualifications:<br />• Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or Marketing with four years of professional experience. Or a non-communication-related degree with at least six years of professional experience in communications or related field. <br />• Experience in the field of journalism, public relations or communications.<br />• Ability to pitch and earn placement of news stories in print and electronic media.<br />• A record of successfully using social media as a tool in strategic public relations. Excellent written and oral communication skills, sound news judgment and an entrepreneurial attitude are essential.<br />• Also needed are the ability to develop and execute communications strategies, experience navigating sensitive topics and/or issues and the ability to prioritize, follow through and work independently under tight deadlines. Experience in higher education, health care communications and knowledge of video and other multimedia are a plus.</p>
