The Spectrum News Environment: Spectrum News is a 24-hour news network that requires employees be flexible and available to work various shifts throughout the day, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays. The network is currently focused on the morning news, which means your day could start very early, but it also means your workday will end around noon (most days). What we’re looking for in an Assignment Manager to oversee the assignment desk function. Manage staff to ensure news and stories are appropriately covered. Develop and administer schedules and performance requirements for the department •Hire and supervise assignment and planning editors; schedules assignment desk personnel •Liaise with News Director to create individual development plans for all desk editors •Direct field personnel as needed in assigning news coverage and stories, working with shift Executive Producers •Gather and research story ideas through beat calls and reading wire services, newspapers, magazines and social media •Demonstrate news judgment in selecting and/or recommending stories •Assign stories to reporters in collaboration with a Producers and leadership •Maintain communication with all personnel involved with newscast •Coordinate with Assignment Desk at sister stations for coverage sharing •Create and distribute coverage grid to sister stations and authorized partners •Fill in as Assignment Editor on occasion •Follow through on all assignments meeting required deadlines •Develop sources within the community, including government agencies and public relations representatives •Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications: Ability to read, write, speak and understand English Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work effectively within a team environment and interact with all personnel within the organization Proficient at inspiring staff to attain station goals of creativity, urgency and accuracy Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills Ability to anticipate situations and plan over a one- to two-year time span Ability to anticipate situations, meet strict deadlines, organize, and manage multiple priorities Attention to detail Must be able to work rapidly and accurately Knowledge of current events and industry trends Pro-active with demonstrated enthusiasm in dealing with breaking news and high-stress situations Must be able to effectively train others Working knowledge of general office computer software and newsroom software Ability to analyze and interpret data Ability to effectively present information to management Ability to make decisions and solve problems while working under pressure Ability to show judgment and initiative and to accomplish job duties Must be able and willing to work different shifts, report to work on time, and be flexible with schedule changes
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, Management or related field or comparable television management work experience; 5+ Assignment desk experience in television news;5+ Management experience

This includes, but is not limited to equipment and power failures, loss of contracted services, storms or severe weather, and loss of staff members •Participate in an established on-call rotation •Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at varying distances
