Reporting to Assistant Director of International Admissions and Immigration with an indirect report to the Assistant Director of Student Mobility, the International Student Services Coordinator is responsible for the welfare of all of Montclair State University’s international students, including Exchange Visitors (students, scholars, and specialists) and sponsored, visiting, and exchange students. The ISSC is responsible for providing support and daily life advice to help international students (and scholars) succeed. The ISSC liaises among international students and university faculty and administrators to monitor, address and help develop each international student’s academic, social, and behavioral well-being on and off-campus The ISSC will provide intercultural adjustment assistance, programs that facilitate cultural exchange, and advocacy for international students and scholars, both within the University and with the community.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Advise and counsel all international students including Exchange Visitors and sponsored, visiting, and exchange students on issues pertaining to: academics, housing, cultural adjustment, health insurance, financial support, employment, taxes, and personal issues.
Plan, organize, promote and oversee excursions and activities for international students and short-term cohorts of students including, but not limited to, setting up locations and activities, securing transportation and tickets for field trips.
Follow all procurement policies for securing services and vendors for hotels, buses, excursions.
Facilitate timely payments for all services and maintain impeccable financial records.
Participate in and secure appropriate chaperones for field trips.
Coordinate student arrivals and pickups.
Develop and provide Orientation for all International Students and Scholars including exchange, sponsored, visiting, and degree-seeking.
Plan and execute special welcome events for cohorts of sponsored students.
Serve as primary liaison and advisor to all admitted international students for pre-arrival, housing, and adjustment.
Support all students in the Feliciano School of Business Disney International College Program by securing contracts for health insurance, and conducting American Culture presentation.
Working with Residence Life to administer the Global Living Community, including recruitment of residents, room assignments, and roommate adjustment concerns.
Maintain and grow resources and partnerships for off-campus housing options for international scholars and students.
Develop and administer a Global Ambassadors Program to involve MSU international and domestic students as volunteers in programming.
Develop and administer a Buddy Program between study abroad students and American students.
Plan and implement intercultural and social programs for Montclair State’s international students and scholars, including Cookies and Culture, topical panels, and off-campus excursions.
Build and maintain relationships with university offices and academic departments and act as liaison to these on behalf of Montclair State’s international students.
Promote a campus culture of inclusiveness that is welcoming and aware of and international students.
Coach and mentor international students on sociocultural adjustment to ensure the international students are set for success in their academics, their housing and in extra-curricular activities.
Build a network of local family referrals for hosting holidays, events and short-term housing placements. Maintain a healthy relationship with recruited host families by organizing activities that keep hosts engaged and interested and ensure all staff members do the same.
Coordinate all logistics of the Sash Ceremony celebrating International Student graduation.
Actively contribute to Office of International Engagement team goals, policies, budgets, and meetings.
Actively pursue professional development to ensure knowledge of immigration regulations and policies, including but not limited to those pertaining to Exchange Visitors; ongoing regulatory compliance; counseling skills; and knowledge of intercultural communication and programs.
Work closely with the International Recruitment and Partnerships Coordinator to develop website updates, news stories and social media announcements related to international students.
Learn and utilize campus software programs including Banner, PeopleSoft, Terra Dotta and Workday.
Other duties and tasks as assigned.
Some evenings and weekends required.

Ability to recognize problems and generate alternatives or offer solutions, based on existing guidelines.
Knowledge and understanding of theories of cultural development, adjustment and awareness.
Working knowledge of MS Office Suite, MS Outlook, database management and website creation and maintenance.
Skill in setting priorities among a wide variety of competing tasks and demands. Ability to prioritize tasks in a manner that reflects their importance to overall job responsibilities and departmental needs, and to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience recruiting, supervising, training and evaluating volunteers and coordinating work for others.
Skill in working independently and following through on assignments, with minimal direction.
Strong presentation skills.
Ability to attend occasional programming on evenings and weekends.
Advanced degree in education or related field from an accredited college or university.
Familiarity with J-1 and J-2 Exchange Visitor regulations, policies, and advising preferred.
Proficiency in a second language and/or extended period of time spent living or working abroad.
Two or more years’ experience working in international higher education.
